In a cloud burst which struck the narrow canyon in the mountains abuve Mitchell, which is 50 miles south of here, at 0 o'clock last night, two lives were lost and 25 buildiugs, half the huuscs in town, were swept away. Of the population of the town of Mitchell 250 people more than half lied to the adjacent hillside, through fear when the omiuomj silence came and tho heavy bank of terror-inspiring clouds were seen to form. The other half of the population, excepting two persons referred to, succeeded in get ting to tlie hillside after the roar of the waters was heard coining down the mountain. The drowned people wore Martin Smith, more than 00 years of ago, and Mrs. Beth tine, almost 00 years of age. The wife of Martin Smith, almost as old as he, succeeded in getting to a place of safety. Eyewitnesses, talking over the long distance telephone with Condon today, say that the wave of wator seemed fully 25 feet iu height. Its roar could be heard for several miles. Above the town seme 300 yards '.wo creeks, Dvidge creek and Mill creek, join. Kach of those creeks has Us source in the "mountains above the J town. Each creek, by the cloud burst, ; overran its banks, ar.d when the waters joined at Miichell the mighty volume oversowed the narrow canyon in which the town is slunued. The town has but one principal street and every build'ug on tho low t:r side of this street was swi.pt down the valley, while the buildings on the; upper side of the creek werubat little damaged. A strange feature of the storm was that uot a bit of rain fell in Mitchell. At the same time a fearful torrent was seen falling on the mountain near by. thevolume inornasi-.ig until it looked as if a river were cos.-endicg on the mountain side. More than one hour before the wave descended the people were filled with fear; and, reali.ing that their town was in much the fcamo predicament as Heppusr ht;d been in, they dispatched an outrider down the valley to warn the farm', rs near the town.
