To know Mr. Shupa was to love and respeoi him as u true Christian MiitlBinan. Ho wasovor roaily with encouiMjrin words arid a helping hand in every kind of worthy and good work. His fr'endship whn won was umiinu and enduring. HiH political career was straightfor ward and honest and his character uu blemiHhod. In otllco ho nerved the pooplu and was kind and obliging to till, and loavosa record above reproach. Ho lovod to bo much at home in com lany with his wlfo and childron, thus proving the grandeur of his character iu his loving devotion to his family. At tho early ago of suvenUion ho con foHGd ami obeyed his Saviour; but hi moro active Christian life dates from soon after the organization of the first Christian l.'hurch of liosohuig, in which membership ho lived till tho day of his tk-ath. Ho served the church as chorister from lis organiza tion constantly and faithfully and as ono of a older.s for several yearn. Ho has also filled many other positions In tho church and its several societies. He is mourned by every membor of his local church. For a number of years he served as trustee for the town of Oak land. In J8.S5 Mr. Shupe was elected state senator from Douglas county on the republican ticket. In 183!) he served as chief clerk of tho state senate. In j 1!)0 he moved to Hose burg where he was appointed register of the U. S. f land oilice. In IN Hi he was elected county clerk, on the republican ticdet, ' and served ontj term. During the ses sions of tho state legislature of 1897, ; 1898, 18!f!) and liMl he served either as. chief clerk or reading clerk of the sen ate. Since his retirement from public : life Mr. Shupe conducted a law busi ness in this city. j Tho funeral was conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, April 4, 11)04, at the First Christian church, which,1 although tho largest editlce in tho city, was entirely fio small to neat tbo mul titude that wished to do him honor and show sympathy for his sorrowing ones, only about half obtained entrance to tho building. Tho Moral offerings; last tribute to tho honored dead were numerous aud beautiful beyond descrip tion, and banked about aud upon the casket nearly covered it completely. Tho scripture lesson was read by Dr. J. A. Towusend, of tin; First Presby terian Church, followed by prayer by Kef, Ceo. C. Kitehoy, pastor of the First Christian Church, after which J. N. Lester, former pastor of the church, spoko briefly, but most touch- ingly aud lovingly, of the high Chris I tian charactor aud exemplary life of the dead. The remains wore interred in tho Masonic cemetery, the services at the grave being conducted by Itevs. Lester and Ilitchey. These last rites were witnessed by a large concourse of friends. lies i ties the host of friends who mourn the death of Mr. Shupe there j remains his wife, Mrs. Mary E. Shupe; , three daughters, Mrs. Albert Abraham, j Minnie W. Shupe, Kthel Shupe, and a son, Virgil Shupe, all of this city. Al so a brother, P. T. Shupe, of Chicago, Ills., and a sister, Mrs. R J. Metz, of Colfax, Washington. Many old friends and former neighbors from Oakland were in attendance at the funeral ser vice.
