Houses built of sand, but hh substnn Uul uud durable aa granite, have been made possible by a process Just per fected In England by Mr. L. l Ford of (ires ford. Mr. Ford Is veil known In South Af rica, where before tho Koer war lie founded t'ordHliiirg, a suburb of Johan nesburg, uud also tho Johannesburg waterworks uud the l'retoriu Electric Ughtlng compuny. A bod of clean snud and ground quicklime are nil the materials nei-dt d rur tho new artificial rock. The Ingre dients are mixed In proper proportions mechanically and forced by a screw In to a mold formed of a very strong steel cylinder. After the mold is fllled It is placed In a box, and the air it contains Is sucked out by an air pump. Hot water Is then admitted. The water rushes Into. every minute Bpace and seta the particles of lime to slacking. The lime wells and causes a great pressure In the mold, while at the same time an Intense heat la produced. Under the Influence of the heat and pressure the sand and lime arc molded into a rock which has 00 per cent as much strength as the hardest granite. It Is ready for use In eight hours The rock Is of the same composition as the old Roman cement, the most durable of building muteriala. Tho se cret of making this Roman cement has been lost for oges. Tho pew building stone costs but 22 cents n cubic foot Tin) secret of Mr. Ford's success is said to lie In his u6 of o cylindrical mold. Others who tried to make silicate of lime bulldlnn stone used square molds. They did not get an even distribution of the Internal and external strains, and the stone produced wnstuil of cracks. ADJUSTABLE WRENCH. Requtrea .No Turnln of Thumb Wheels to Hetcalute Ita Opening;. With a large share of the machinery which Is used In pgr manufacturing Industries the builders furnish special wrenches which Wilt only fit nuts of a certain size and ore Intended to he used In connection with the one ma chine. These, of eourw, need no ad justing to fit the nut and are a great convenience and save time for the ma chinist But there are many Instances In the everyday work of the machinist where a wrenolr which can be rapidly set to any necpssary size will prove a grent advantage to the man who Is handling It The usual form of wrench requires tho turning of n thumb wheel several revolutions to vary tho distance be tween the Jaws even a quarter of an Inch, and there can bo no movoment of tho Jaw without turning this screw. Here Is a wrench which has the niov ablo Jaw perfectly free to slide from WUENCn WITH SLIDING JAW. closure to its widest openinc. on'y eumlng to a slop whenever the emu block Is wt. Tills cum block rests in tho center of the slotted bundle and h so pivoted that Its .edgo Is eccentric to the pin on which it revolves. Whether the block is tilted to sh-p tho Jaw close to the Hxed bend or to allow it to slldo freely the whole lensrb of the opening, the cam block ent;ap' the rear of tho Jaw In such a mnnwr as to afford a strong support for the movable Jaw. It requires no rotation of adjusting screws, but only a simple turn of the block and a sliding move tnent of the loose Jaw to sot the wrench, which probably has quite as much oxpauslon as tho majority of light wrenches In common use. A New Anathtle. At a recent meeting of tho Krenoli Academy of Medicine M, Courtode gave an account of a now local aniiMthetlc. It Is pn rn -am t do-ben zotn ether and has been named onrestheslne. It Is a derivative of orthoform and Is but sllKhtly soluble In water, but ftwly o In glycerin and In fatty bodies. It If not po'sonotn. which gives It a great advantage over cocnlne. while Us ac tion Is much loss transitory than that of that drug. M. Court ade has used tlw drug, especially In cases of patients aufferlnit from tuberculosis or syphllltli ulceration of the pharynx which ren derod swallowing very painful or even Impossible. After an application of an n'Stheslne In powder they were nble tr. swallow without pain. Rnplil Trlewrrtphr. The Pollnk-Vlrng system o rapid te leuniphy having shown a possibility o 40,0tt0 words an hour over tho 4 17 mile between Itorlln and Konlgsberg, It wll be put In use by tho Corman post a' service on the biwy line from Uerlln t" Frankfort. The regular north bound local train, No. 12, due hero at 10:18 a. m., arrived at one o'clock this afternoon, having been delayed by a rock slldo ' three miles east of West Fork. A game of basket ball was played In the Roseburg Theatre last night by the I lose bury High School team and another team styling themselves the Independents. The former team won by a score of 26 to 10. The line up was as follows: jpl. H. S. Forwards, Strong and Ragsdale;center, Faulkner; guards, McMullen and Fraley. Independents Forwards, Kltzman and Bradley; ' center, King; guards, Bell and Milling-' ton. j Messrs S. C. Flint, B. V. Strong and F. W. Woolley, constituting the board of directors for the Koseburg, school district, who visited Eugene this week to examine the heating and ventilating system in the new high school building there, were much pleased with the plan upon which It operates. With a few minor changes of detail the same system will be adop ted for use in the new high school building now under construction here. They found this fan and furnace system supplies a uniformity of temperature throughout the rooms and halls, and besides, It furnishes a means of thor ough ventilation unobtainable by any gravity system. It Is also guar anteed to be very economical in the use of fuel, the saving in this way so they were Informed, more than paying for the power necessary to drive the fun for forcing the warm air through the building.
