WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1010 BliOWINQ TIN WHISTLE. Secretary Daniels when ho told Congress that the United: states was prepared, unless Great Britain sub scribed in full to the league of na tions and to disarmament, to build a navy which would bo incomparably greater than Great Britain's, was blowing a tin whistle against all the winds of hiBtory. He made American policy foolish. He made the British think we wore crazy. He said, to make the matter worse, that he spoke with tho author ity of President Wilson, and that he announced a government policy. The British regarded tho utterance with amazement. Incredulity, dislike, and impatience. That statement of Daniels' waB a toy pistol presented at tho head of the British nation. The British found it an implied threat and found the threat futile. Has Mr. Daniels ever heard of that distinguished sailor and- profound philosopher produced by the institution of which he Is at present the head? Did he ever hear of Mahon? Did he ever read Mnhon ? If he has hoard of hi m and if he lias read of him, he must know that when a nation threatens British security by building against its navy, it is offered two choices to stop building or to light. Several years before the war Ger many was given that alternative and Germany elected to continue build ing. The Gorman navy is now i British ports. Spain, France, Hoi land and Germany have run against this lnevitablo necessity of the Brit ish empire, and thoy are not on tho sea as military factors today. Whon a grantor nnvy than tho Bi ll Ish navy exists, Great Britain and tin British empire exist by sufTeruncc and no nation will oxlst by BUffcran lr it can exist otherwise. Why can we not doal with realities Instead of with illusions? Wo do not need the greatest navy In the world Groat Britain docs. Why oven threa ten, In a foolish throat, tho osHentiul or British security whon It 1b not a essential of American security? On security is to be found In tho second navy, Indisputably the second navy and In a citizen army under univcrs ni sorvice. Canada Is tho British Hostage to ub, If wo have this nrni under universal sorvico. Chlcagi i riuune. OF The following "Song of the Ord nance" was recently sent to Mrs. Ed win Stearns of Oakland by her hus band, who has been in France since last August with the Ordnance Corps. Mr. Stearns has been in the Chief Ordnance Ofllco at Tours for some time, but word was received last Sun day that he had left for an Evacua tion Camp on January 14th. Oh! we're the bunch that made the guns The doughboys used to Btrafe the Huns And put old Prltzle on the run The Ordnance! And we're the gang that loaded shells That made the artillery chorus swell And blew the Boche all to hell The Oordnance! Chorus: The Ordnance, the Ordnance, The boys that did the work No matter what the job was, We never knew to shirk. The trucks got broke, machlno gun choked, And rifles broke In two; They brought them to the Ordnance We made them good as new. I The Goneral's car broke down ono day The General said: "Hero's Hell to pay": He grabbed the phono, I heard him say: "Tho Ordnance". The Ordnance man cunie double quick, In half a sec' the car was fixed. The General said, "No Job will stick The Ordnance!" Chorus: The Ordnance, the Ordnance, Our gang wua on the go; You always found the Ordnance Where trouble stnrted' to show. We grabbed our tools and "Carried On" Our work was never done; For when your in the Ordnance You're a-working son-of-a-gun. Tho Infantry, the Cavalry, And oven tho Artillery, Couldn't do a thing until they'd seen The Ordnance. We fixed tlielr gunB and bayonels too; too; We fixed' tho sights to carry true; Everything they used caino through Tho Ordnance. GYMNASTIC DANCING.
