THURSDAY. JANUARY 23, 1010 GOOD RESULTS OF CRITICISM. An a. result of the repeated de mands of Republicans for a change in the management ot the Bureau Ar -uni. HiRk Insurance, the pro- fesalonal "efBciency expert", under whose supervision the affairs of the bureau want from DttOl 10 worne, una .lidon minorseded by an army officer, who has ipromUed to send allotment checks to soldiers' dependents with as little delay as possible. Col. Linds- ley, the new chief, nas torn me Don ate Military committee that he will hold himself personally responsible for greater speed in getting out the monev in the future, a recent re port from Secretary of the-Treasury Glass gives Borne idea of the present Btate of affairs at tne -war isa ui flce. Of the 2,600,000 checks for dependents' allotments and allow ances deducted from soldiers pay for November and December, only nan oon have been mailed thus far. In order to catch up with the work checks for the two months are being written simultaneously in many cases, and Mr. Oluss predictB that be fore the end o( January the work will be no to date. If the promised improvement materializes, It may be claimed very properly by the Repub licans that It is due to their persist ence in airing the conditions at the bureau, and citing Borne of tne many glaring Instances of Inefficiency that have characterized the conduct of that office. In practically every caBe their criticism have been answered by the Democrats by statements of the immense amount of work thrown Upon the buroau soon after Its crea-, tlun, and the Impossibility of attend-; ing to it all without some delay. The recent change In executives 1b an ad mission of failure In the past and of the truth of the repeated assertions of the RopubllcanB. Censored cablegrams of the Asso-. elated f ress and other news agencies state that the peace congross Is form ally under way, but so fur the Inform ation that Censor Creel sends over the wires aro detailed accounts of Wilson's allegod unparalleled popu larity with European royalty and vivid descriptions of dress-parade luncheons given in honor of the Ame rican executive. All this 'bunk may please Wilson's vanity, but to tho average nmerlcan who wants to know cold-blooded facts, It 1b down-right assinlty. People on this side do not care a rap whether Wilson's photo graph adorns or disfigures the monu cardB at a state dinner. What Ame rica wants is opon action, something that the Wilson administration ap parently knows little about. Ten months of democratic admlnl Btratlon of railroads of tlio United States has cost the public something over t050.000.000 In cold cash. Al - most a billion dollars have been taken out of the pockets of the peo ple over thulr inrotosts, and the pro cess of pauperizing the consumers Is going merrily on. Frolght rates have gone up, Incroaslng tho cost on every thing shipped, and this groat sum in addod charges was taken from every man, woman and child in the coun try. Continuation of this thing for another five yours, as tho nation in ulanutly informed by the administra tion is desired, would put the entire country in tho poor house. Tho Irish question 1ms rosolvod ltBolf into a republic, bo far nt the Biun Flon la concerned, and open rebellion appears to be the program Delegatos to tho pence convention will bo settled, aud then tho ouob- tion of getting thorn admitted to the council will bob up, providing tho DritlBh government doos not clamp the lid down on tho whalo bunch of home rule agitators and possibly hnng tho arch conspirators before they have a chance to kick up any i art n or disturbance in Europe. If all government utilities aro to bocomo public proporty, who Is going to pay all tho extra taxes? And to run all tno public utilities woul,. re quire a great army of public officials, wnien would naturally make moro taxes. Lot of room for thought on this suhjoct, remarks an exchange. The United States has no moro right to exercise "good offices" in securing homo rulo for Ireland than England' had a right to Interfere In the South on behalf ot secessionists during tho civil war. The Issiien me parallel. , , lrlnn agitators aro staging the preliminaries for a first-class hanging ju ine near tuiure. THE BI'KCIAITY SHOP. Thoso of ns who are past middle ago are prono to eat too much meat and in consequence deposit lime-salta in tho arteries, veins and Joints. We often sutler rom twinges ot rheumatism or lumbago, sometimes from gout, swollen hands or feet. There is no longer tho slightest need of this, however, as the new prescription, "Amine," ia bound to give Immediate results as it ia many times moro potent than lithia, in ridding the impoverished blood of its poisons by way of the kidneys. It can be ob tained at almost any drag store, by simply asking for "Ammo" for kidneys or backache. It will overcome such conditions aa rheumatism, dropsical swellings, cold extromitios, scaldind and fffl burning urine and sleeplessness duo to constant arising from bed at night.
