As an offset to the sickening sym pathy, which some people are wasting upon tthe supposedly hungry Huns, the Berkeley, California, Gazette has begun the, publication of a series of articles under the heading "Lest We Forget.'" These articles will relate well authenticated Instances of Ger man barbarities, perpetrated by Ger man soldiers or German civilians with or without the authority of the German government. And instances are not lacking, From the day when the Kaiser deuounced his treaty with Belgium as mere scrap of paper and proceeded to devastate that ' in offensive country, down to the day of the signing of the armistice, the Germans were as ruthless as they were powerful. Their atrocities were limited only by their opportunities. None of the rules of civilized warfare was binding upon the Hun. No in- . stinct of humanity prompted! an act of mercy. Not even the helpless prisoner was Immune from the bru-. tallty of the sons of Attila. Having neaped upon' their roes every injury. lndlgnttx and Insult which a savage mind could devise, the Huns depriv ed them of even the satisfaction of vengeance by seeking an armistice as soon as defeat was certain, and sur rendering their fleet without firing a shot. The slightest sympathy be stowed upon such a people Is abso lutely wasted. The slightest-aid ad vanced to them is worse than wasted! They are as incapable of appreciation and gratitude as they were wanting in either sense of honor or feeling or mercy. Newspapers that publish tno facts regarding the German re . cord "Lest We Forget" are serving wen meir constituencies. ' Some demlcratle ideaB of efficiency remind one or certain mechanical cartoons depleting Involved methods or attaining simnle ends. It linnem-n that argon, nn Insert, non-lnflamable gas, win be used In the future for the Inflation of balloons In order to eliminate the tiro hazard'. Natural . gas containing one por cent of argon has been discovered at a nolnt in Texas. It is proposed to build a pipe line over m nines in lengtn from tho gas well to another point, and there . erect an extractng plant, where the argon wll bo separated, placed In cylinders and shipped to balloon fields for use. To extract one per cent of argon 99 por cpnt of hydro gon is to be transported throi sh a pipe line, costing $1,060,000 to con struct, In order to reach a plant yet to be built at a cost ot (900,000. To the layman the obvious procedure wouldi be, to erect the plant in thJ Immodlate vicinity of the gas well. luurouy saving time ana large con. structon and maintenance costs. The proposal of United States poace envoys to destroy the sur rendered vessels of the German fleet does not sound good. The value of the captured battle ships and crui sers ib a staggering figure, andi It would be little Bhort of criminal to take the course suggested. Senator Lodge has very properly introduced a resolution asking the etnto depart ment to clear up the mystory of wiiBiice aumority for this proposal vault) uuju. The reason nobody ever likes to imy taxes or. a lire Insurance premium : is because he can't Bee where the tax money goes and he resents the idea that he has to (pay to keep himself "" e puts up for the Insur ance premium. SHOEMAKER The hardest' thing in the world la to try to appear Interested when an acquaintance Is telling you how much money he made laBt year, while you are trying to figure out where to rilise the price of a new overcoat. While a boy is dreaming of the day when he'll either be a policeman anil arrest everybody he doesn t like, or cowboy andi travel with a circus, the girl Is dreaming of a. home filled witJh servants. Maybe the reaBon a Democratic ad' ministration was willing to accept war time prohibition was that knew it was driving everybodey to drink. The allies at the peace conference should bear In mind that the more they divide, the mono their troubles will multiply. , When a man starts to fit up an office, the first thing he thinks of Is a cuBpidor, but a, woman always gets a nower vase. Many a tired mother ot screaming, fighting children, wishes sho nil .Tilt also enter a peace conference. You may not like those you have to associate with, and the chances are the feeling is mutual. The only way some meek men ever get their names In the paper Is to be defeated for office. We are all creatures of sin and some of ub Beem mighty .proud of It. If you're not lofty, you can't fall.
