DROOIJNO SENTIMENTALITY.
As an offset to the sickening sym
pathy, which some people are wasting
upon tthe supposedly hungry Huns,
the Berkeley, California, Gazette has
begun the, publication of a series of
articles under the heading "Lest We
Forget.'" These articles will relate
well authenticated Instances of Ger
man barbarities, perpetrated by Ger
man soldiers or German civilians
with or without the authority of the
German government. And instances
are not lacking, From the day when
the Kaiser deuounced his treaty with
Belgium as mere scrap of paper
and proceeded to devastate that ' in
offensive country, down to the day
of the signing of the armistice, the
Germans were as ruthless as they
were powerful. Their atrocities were
limited only by their opportunities.
None of the rules of civilized warfare
was binding upon the Hun. No in-
. stinct of humanity prompted! an act
of mercy. Not even the helpless
prisoner was Immune from the bru-.
tallty of the sons of Attila. Having
neaped upon' their roes every injury.
lndlgnttx and Insult which a savage
mind could devise, the Huns depriv
ed them of even the satisfaction of
vengeance by seeking an armistice as
soon as defeat was certain, and sur
rendering their fleet without firing a
shot. The slightest sympathy be
stowed upon such a people Is abso
lutely wasted. The slightest-aid ad
vanced to them is worse than wasted!
They are as incapable of appreciation
and gratitude as they were wanting
in either sense of honor or feeling
or mercy. Newspapers that publish
tno facts regarding the German re
. cord "Lest We Forget" are serving
wen meir constituencies.

gas, win be used In the future for
the Inflation of balloons In order to
eliminate the tiro hazard'. Natural
. gas containing one por cent of argon
has been discovered at a nolnt in
Texas. It is proposed to build a pipe
line over m nines in lengtn from tho
gas well to another point, and there
. erect an extractng plant, where the
argon wll bo separated, placed In

fields for use. To extract one per

The proposal of United States
poace envoys to destroy the sur
rendered vessels of the German fleet
does not sound good. The value of
the captured battle ships and crui
sers ib a staggering figure, andi It
would be little Bhort of criminal to
take the course suggested. Senator
Lodge has very properly introduced
a resolution asking the etnto depart
ment to clear up the mystory of
