The dance given at Riddle last ev ening by the Riddle home guard was largely attended, many from here taking the opportunity to enjooy the auto ride to and from Unit city. The ladles of the Red Cross of that place served a deliclousl unch at midnight, as well as various rorfosh ments during tho evening. Two beautirul quilts were raffled off for the benefit of the Red Cross and a neat sum rcnlizcd. Passed Througlit City Last Night. Captain Fred Dyars. of Camp Fre mont, Calif., son of W. H. Byars, of .Salem, passed through the city last evening enrotite north. He was met at the train here by his aunt, Mrs. C. L, Hadley, and cousin, Harry Slo cum. who enjoyed a brief visit with the captain.-- He states that Sergeant Kirst Class Chas. Morton Hadley, a former Roseburg boy, has been trans ferred from ambulance company No. 32 to chief clerk of the camp sur geon's office at Camp Fremont, and tlrat Lieutenant Tiudley is getting ilong nlce.lv with his new duties. Wilson, of Voncalla, was born at Yoncalla, October 2G, 1896, and passed to a higher life June 24, 1918. Besides his father and mother, the deceased' Is survived by two brothers. Joe and W. W., Jr., and five sisters. Addis M., Leota L., Velum, Alberta, and Lovena Wilson, all of Yoncalla. Verle spent the greater portion of his life in Yoncalla, and was a univer sal favorite wlt5 all. He was gradu ated from the Yoncalla high school in 1915. slnco which time he has proven himself a true soldier of ag riculture, in the management of his father's farm, while the latter is ful filling his duties as postmaster of Yoncalla. Verle was truly patriotic, and was untiring in his work for the Red Cross during every drive. He had just reached the age of twenty-one, and' expected e'er long to be one of Uncle Sain s defenders as a soldier Funeral services were held nt the Presbyterian church in Yoncalla on the afternoon of June 26, by Rev. Tlilehlnson, of the Sutherlin M. E. church, who paid a touching tribute to the life of the deceased. Beauti ful singing was rendered by the fol lowing quartotte: Luther Daugherty, Mrs. Luther Daugherty, Miss Elsie Chestnut and Ralph Chestnut, ac companied on the piano by Mrs. Har ry Stearns. The pall bearers were friends and schoolmates of the young man, who. had so long been associated with them in school life and other active work in his home town. They were: Carl Long, Vincent Applegate, Jay Huntington, Berrlngton Gibson, Al fred Swift and Dare Klngery. The floral offerings were many and beau tiful, fitting tributes to the purity and sweetness of his Influence among us. The following relatives came from elsewhere ,to bid him a last farewell: Mrs. Hannah Wilson, Minnie Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. James Cowan and Gus Cowan, of Drain; J. M. McDolc, Harry McDole and wife, and Mr. and Mrs. John Veatch and daughters, of Cottage Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wilcox, of Oakland, besides many old friends of the deceased and family. These are in addition to 80 men now studying radio opera tion. These men will have had at least high school education.
