Four well known pioneers met In Riddle last Sunday morning. 1 nej were George Quine, the high sheriff of Douglas county; Will .. mown and O. L. Willis, the war marshals of Riddle precinct, and Prof. J. i. Horner, of Corvallis. As tney were told there would be no preaching In Kiddle that morning, the quartette decided that a visit to Nickel moun tain would be a recuperative pastime rlnaelv akin to worship. Moses, and later Joaquin Miller, went up into tho mountain to catch new inspirn tlon. So to bring the practice down to date, the quartette agreed to "go up into the mountain also. The delightful ascent of four miles was made in a Dodge automobile eeared on intermediate, just fast enough to survey tho charming val ley below, on which tho Bun Bhines every day when the sun is not cur tained by fog or cloud. Midway up the mountain a rustle Is heunl across a ravine. Is it a "slacker"? Tho car stops. No; It Is only a calf elud ing our Singular conveyance which It views for the first lime; and the rum ble of our englno nnnounces that our chariot is again pursuing Us as cent up Into the clouds The unfolding reel of scenery is bo delightful that everybody wants to talk aT once. But tho Journey has ended too soon, and all alight. Tho high sheriff who spent the previoJH night in a successful hunt for out laws is given a bed, while tho others make a short survey or tne mines of nickel, ochre and chromito that wore developed by the mlnerologlHt of the pnrty. Then a slight detour to the aqucr Ium, where a school of large eastern brook trout were lazily sunning themselves, until the strangers ap peared, when the finny tribe sudden ly darted off in ovcry direction. But upon observing the approach of tho keeper to tho strangers, the trout ventured nigh again, for fish like men, judge others hy tne company they keep. After a few lmndruis or crumbled crackers nnd bits of fresh meat wero thrown to them, and when their dinner was eaten, comparative nuiet was restored. Then tliey grace fully glided tnrougn tne cj-u moun tain water like bo many pretty poems while their dainty fins were Keep ing time with (ho rhythm or the r.ur imirlnir falls near by. Ah, It would bo a sin for the fisherman's hook to ruthlessly! drop into that pool of Eden on Nickel mountain. But the Hark Twnln of our parly, hearing a long rumbling sound, an nounced that an automobile was struggling up the mountain. All im mediately repaired to head-iuarturs only to learn that it was not an auto mobile, but that it was tne mgr. sucr iff snoring like a thunderbolt turned It. iso in a anw mill. Such was the respect for the Allan PInkerton or the pnrtv, however, that f'e others did not dlstui him, but withdrew tc the opposite side of the mountain where it would be possible to h themselves speak In ordinary conver sation. Boon dinner call assembled :hc' group around a table richly spread by the landlord, who Is an cuviii "chef". Tl.o landlord said the grace that had previously been offer'-1 liy Ilobert Burns: "Some have meat, but cannot eat: Home would eat. but have no meal We have meat and we can eat, So the good Lord be thunkl'." There was a Juicy steak nnd al that trees aiong for trimmings. The bread was piled high after the fash Ion of a pyramid. The coffee hud the flavor of mountain water anil the choicest brand of coffee pud Ilia the market affords. lOveryt liing In eluding the strawberries was meted out according to scriptural measure. Maple haves served ifs nankins; and a rich center piece, consisting of a bouquet of Azallus tastefully arrang ed In a vase improvised from a dis carded oyster can. helped to give the aspect of a drummer's table in a first clary hotel. But wit and humor nnd flow of soul were Lie sauce which conver t d the delectable dinner into a moun tain feasts. How It It's Quite Possible To motor far in search nf a cooi place, In which to spend the day, and then not enjoy it, very well, merely because the drinking water is warm, flat and insipid.
