THURSDAY, JUNE SI, I0IT. I'KIXT I'AI'EU PIUATKS. Borne time bko the federal trade commlHsion invcutlgated the print paper altuatlon und found that all publishers and fho public In general were being systematically robbed to tho limit by a combino of all paper manufacturers. They found that the prices of paper had boon arbitrarily raised SO per cent In the past year and about 300 per cent since 1914; tnat there was no reaBon or Justifi able excuho for any such raise in prices, and that the combine wus making millions In unuue anu un earned nroiltt. The commission undertook to cui'b the rascally rapacity of tho miner trust, but was without aulli orlty to enfono Its decrees and the manufacturers would not obey, so now it has rocommended to congreHH that thu government take over all tho paper mills and operate them duriiiK the war, allowing the own ers a fair prollt and reducing the nrico to consumers at least one-half. It Is thought this will be done, and tho Canadian government will be asked to co-operato by doing the. same thing, as the bulk of tho Cana dian product Is used in the United Btntes. The commission estimates that tho tmper pirates received over 17, fiOO.OOO in excess profits, over and above what a fair prollt would havo been, during 1910 alone, and that they Intend to douhe that during tho current year. Tho regulation of tills gigantic wrong on tho part of these federat ed thieves, proposed by tho commin slon, is to Include the lohbors, whole sale houses and agencies, who are held to bo in on tho steal. Approximately 20,000 kiiiuII news papers and periodicals havo lieen put out of business during the past two yours by this gang of freeboot ors, and it is high time the gov ernment was throwing tho bunch, nock and heels, into the peniten tiaries. If congress and tho government expect the pooplo to be loyal they must first command the respect and confidence of tho people, and among tho first Btops to bo taken toward insuring that respect and confidence are: i'lrst llronk up all food specula tion and punish uffemlcrs with both tines and jail sentences. Second Slop Iho uso of food grains In tho manufacture of alcohol ic liquors. Third Free the pivss of the poo plo from tho ungodly robbery of Captain Kldds of the paper pool. One gentleman and his wife! dipped" Into tholr pockets aud con tributed a thousand dollars to this great work; another party subscribed Ave hundred dollars, while a third In dividual Just threw a check for two hundred and fifty dollars at the good cause. Contributions of this kind certainly show the proper spirit or patriotism. It Is this sort of giving that puts tho "pep" into the lied Cross spirit and there are many per sons In Douglas .county who co.ld well afford to be just as liberal. Hut, the question is will they "come through?" When you lend a deaf ear to the appeal for Red Cross funds you arc applying walor to (ici many's wheel. If you want to assist the enemy there Is no bettor way than to re fuse the giving of money to the Red Cross fund. It would certainly make tho old kaiser smile ff he could "shako hands" with some of his friends on this Bide of the water who are helping to check tho growth or the Red Cross drive. The News received an anonymous letter yesterday "handing out" some advice, which was promptly con signed to the waste basket. If there Is any specie of a hiiinun being that is worso than the anonymous writer it Is the Blacker. The fellow who wroto yesterday's "spasm" failed to cover up his tracks, however, and we have his "nunrber" for future use. Tho little city of Winchester gave two hundred dollars to the Red CrosB fund' which places the town con spicuously on tho map. i. C. T. U. INSTITUTE Tho W. C. T.
