TUESDAY. NOVKMIIER 21, 1010. THK DEFEATED. I irtv Walt Mason) Since all the campaign flags are furled, the Inst spellbinder's bleated, the saddest thing In this old world la one who was defeated. Until trie last he hoped to win; now drearily no nlkes It, and wears a weird und wintry grin, and would pretend ho likes It. "I did my best while In the same," he says, his eyes a-brlmmlng; 'there are no Bore spots on my frame vlnce In the soup I'm swimming." Will he get back to honest toll, to "Wise and sano endeavor? No! One campaign's enough to spoil a patriot forever. The lust for office In his blind he'll never quit his running, although he meets a nasty thud whenever he goes gunning. To save 1ho dear old spangled flag, nnd serve the darling people, all through his years he'll chew the rag, on forum, stump and steeplo. For weeks and months our weary ears to piffle huve uoen treated; now for the winners -wo have cheers, and grins for the i defeated. WOULD ELECT DIRECT. Apparently emboldened by the ex cess of votes received by President "Wilson over Governor Hughes at the Tcccnt election, Senator Chamberlain of this slate Is returning to his duties In Washington ready to egtn la nampalgn for the passage of a bill Jio 'Will Introduce which chnnges the electoral system to a direct vote of the peoplo for president. The sena tor probably thinks If such a consti tutional amendment Is passed, that eo.itliorn rtatc3 will then allow the negroes to caso their voto pro vided ofcourse that they voto for the nominee of tho demoeralc party, and they would bco to It that this Wi.s done. Soda watere and sandwiches have been advanced In price in the effete vast, and now comes the report that out here on the coast suuer krnut, the delectable, appetizing, odorifer ous Bauer kraut, has jumped to sitVh a price that only the man who pays ttn im-uino inx can eat It any more. Hut among nil this mad riot for (he distinction of being tho highest pric ed article, one solitary thing stands nut In startling solitude with Its rec ord of Immutability, and that one thing Is the "schooner" .of beer -which can still be bought wherever It Is sold, for the sumo old Jitney price of live cents. . L County Court Met Today in Special Session to Fore cast Expenditures. ST JOHN IN ATTENDANCE Xott'ly Eliv-teil f'oinml-'tsloiier Present liml l.h.teiM ( Anirageineistia lleiiiK Mmle By Uie (.'utility Court. The county court met today In special session and commenced the luborous task of forming the budget of county expenses for the coming year. W. E. St. John, who was re cently olected was invited to'be pres ent, and although not taking a Beat In official capacity, was present to follow the action of the court In pre paring the funds for the offices and expenses for the coming year. Strict economy Is the watchword of tho session. . Officers have been asked to eliminate ull unnecessary expenses and it Is believed that the total amount will be lower than last year In spite of the much greater amount of work being done. The court, however, Is taking into con sideration the fact that although the budget is to be reduced that the ef ficiency of tho offices must not. be lessened and with this in view are vory carefully considering the dff ferent esllmntes iwhich are being brought to them. Hond funds, court funds, traveling expenses, materials, and many other Items separate from salaries and of fice expenses must be taken Into con sideration, arranged and totaled so that tho court will know approxi mately how to go about the year's work and In what direction the mon ey which will bo ruised by taxes and other means is to be spent. As yot the officers have not all filed their estimates. The estimate of the assessor's office was flOOO. less than l:st year and including books, stationery and miscellaneous expenses. Is about $69S0. The treas urer's office remains practically tho Bame as Inst year, $1800 being ask ed for salaries and expenses, with $100 for Incidental expenses. , The Bchool superintendent placed his es timate slightly lower than last time, nsking on this occasion for approxi mately $4700, whllo the sheriff and clerk's offices It Is thought will be about the same. The budget will be completed within a few days It Is believed and an estimate will he (placed on the various amounts which the court ex pects to spend. Although tho court does not In tend to tnko up tho matters outside the budget It was agreed today that the bridge at Riddle should bo ruis ed about four foot, as last year It was pai'tlnny wrecked by tho high water and It snTety Is feared for In the event of more hard rains. WILL INSTALL MORK UH'KKRS. Captain J. A. Buchanan returned Inst night from Portland where bo attended a mcttlng of tho general military Btaff. Only routine matters wero attended to among them be ing an order for the installation of ton more lockers in tho local arm ory fur the accommodation of the members of the medical department.
