THK DEFEATED.

irtv Walt Mason)
Since all the campaign flags are
furled, the Inst spellbinder's bleated,
the saddest thing In this old world
la one who was defeated. Until trie
last he hoped to win; now drearily
no nlkes It, and wears a weird und
wintry grin, and would pretend ho
likes It. "I did my best while In the
same," he says, his eyes a-brlmmlng;
'there are no Bore spots on my frame
vlnce In the soup I'm swimming."
Will he get back to honest toll, to
"Wise and sano endeavor? No! One
campaign's enough to spoil a patriot
forever. The lust for office In his
blind he'll never quit his running,
although he meets a nasty thud
whenever he goes gunning. To save
1ho dear old spangled flag, nnd serve
the darling people, all through his
years he'll chew the rag, on forum,
stump and steeplo. For weeks and
months our weary ears to piffle huve
uoen treated; now for the winners
-wo have cheers, and grins for the
i defeated.

The county court met today In
special session and commenced the
luborous task of forming the budget
of county expenses for the coming
year. W. E. St. John, who was re
cently olected was invited to'be pres
ent, and although not taking a Beat
In official capacity, was present to
follow the action of the court In pre
paring the funds for the offices and
expenses for the coming year.
Strict economy Is the watchword
of tho session. . Officers have been
asked to eliminate ull unnecessary
expenses and it Is believed that the
total amount will be lower than last
year In spite of the much greater
amount of work being done. The
court, however, Is taking into con
sideration the fact that although the
budget is to be reduced that the ef
ficiency of tho offices must not. be
lessened and with this in view are
vory carefully considering the dff
ferent esllmntes iwhich are being
brought to them.
Hond funds, court funds, traveling
expenses, materials, and many other
Items separate from salaries and of
fice expenses must be taken Into con
sideration, arranged and totaled so
that tho court will know approxi
mately how to go about the year's
work and In what direction the mon
ey which will bo ruised by taxes and
other means is to be spent.
As yot the officers have not all
filed their estimates. The estimate
of the assessor's office was flOOO.
less than l:st year and including
books, stationery and miscellaneous
expenses. Is about $69S0. The treas
urer's office remains practically tho
Bame as Inst year, $1800 being ask
ed for salaries and expenses, with
$100 for Incidental expenses. , The
Bchool superintendent placed his es
timate slightly lower than last time,
nsking on this occasion for approxi
mately $4700, whllo the sheriff and
clerk's offices It Is thought will be
about the same.
The budget will be completed
within a few days It Is believed and
an estimate will he (placed on the
various amounts which the court ex
pects to spend.
Although tho court does not In
tend to tnko up tho matters outside
the budget It was agreed today that
the bridge at Riddle should bo ruis
ed about four foot, as last year It
was pai'tlnny wrecked by tho high
water and It snTety Is feared for In
the event of more hard rains.
