Altho the sunshine of spring weather has been temporarily with drawn from our midst and the old drizzle Is with us once more, still ' the good cheer which usually per vades tho atmosphere of social gatherings has in no way been af fected. A great deal of interest was mani fested in the performance of "Peg j O' Aly Heart" which was presented j at the Antlers theatre last night, j in spite of thu weather the com-j pany played to a fair house, many! of those present having been so de lighted by the play last year that' they chose to see It repeated. Altho Florence Martin as "Peg" was per- haps a shade less bonny thun Peg O'Neil, who flayed the part last year, still, she was a delightriil, roguish Peg and brought out the Irish humor of the play to perfec tion. A number of out-of-town peo ple came on the evening train to witness the play, those from Suther lin being Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Mc Lean, Mr. and Mrs. Stark, Dr. and Mrs. Bennett and daughter, Helen, Miss Irva Vance, Miss Gladys Fra n r, M I bs Janet V ra n z, Al lss Maude JleynohlH, Mr. and iMrn. Mental Culture Club. Education was the topic for the afternoon at the meeting of the Men tal Culture club yesterday. During a short business session in which t ie matter of Child Welfare Week was discussed, it was decided to unite with fot her organizations in the state and country to make the movement a success, and a power for good. The program then opened with a splendid talk by Miss Mar garet Page on the subject of our Immigrant citizens. Miss Pago has personally visited Kills Island, out of New York harbor, where all Im migrants are Retained and Exam ined before being allowed to land In this country, and gave a graphic de scription of conditions surrounding the forlorn foreigner on his arrival there, and the difficulties he en counters before he is really assured that he may enter the "promised land". MIbs Page then took up the matter of the immigrant's children and the process of making them into American citizens. She talked very interestingly of her visits to tho schools in Boston where these little foreigners are instructed in the fun damentals of knowledge, closing fry illustrating how they are trained In patriotism and allegiance to this country. Miss Mario Martens had the sub ject of Illiteracy In this country, giv ing some startling statistics by way of Introduction, then telling of tne efforts that nre being made to over come this state of affairs. The main theme of her paper was tho moon light sOhools of Kentucky, where grown people whoso early advant ages were meager, aro being given the opportunity to learn If they so desire. Miss Martens passed a num ber of pictures in connection with thlH subject, showing some of the classes of adults fit work, and rohh of the results of their labors In tin shape of letters written by them Many of these "pupils" are grand parents and study along with tlieii grandchildren. One school even boasts four geTierations In one class, the great grandfather of the young !st being eighty-seven years of nge mil hard at work nt his three "U's". Mrs. .1, A. Huchanan supplement ed Miss Martens' paper with a re port on tho work of the educatlona bureau of Oregon for tho past year uid Its aims for the future. Mrs. H. K. .lope had another ver interesting paper on the subject ' "Literature and Moving Pictures a Factors In Kd neat I on". Sho began by translating "literature" tnfcVlhf more tangible term "hooks," and pointed out their power for good or evil In the lives of the young, an tho Impotance of n wise selection of reading matter for anyone. Mrs. .lope a !ho presented the mat ter of moving pictures and their educa tional possibilities. She told of their use by missionaries in convert inn he.'lben to Christianity and eviliza llon, and In the schools of today which present some subjects on the screen. She finished with a plea for proper censor;' hip of t hese pictures which have beeohio such a factor in the lives of .our youth, arid whose In fluence for good or evil can prob ably not be nsVisured. A deliubtfnl time was enjoyed by r. party of little folks, when Shirley Ware, daughter or Mrs. T. K. Wfcire. iiitertniurd n number of her small Iru-nds at her home In North liose i!u;.
