During my terms of office the work hat, heen largely Increased by the legislature without a single ad vance in salary anil by the natural increase caused by changing economic conditions. And the county court has been asked to pay out but one bill of $15.00 for deputy hire during this j visit. time, and that on account of having; Harry Stapleton and wife havo re to refund special road tax held bv ! turned from Portland where they mores won the day, with the fresh men second. J ATH1NG Is as popular at Coney Island during January, when the. water - Is at freezing point, as it is during July, when It Is around 70 degrees. 1 M only It Is not as popular with so many persons. During the summer the salt water bathing at this famous New York seashore resort at tracts hundreds of thousands. In January it attrncts- only a hundred or so These winter bathers call themselves "polar bears." "snow birds," "winter mermaids" and "human icicles.' They take a dip even In the coldest weather and enjoy It These pictures were taken on New Year's day and show that the bathers are not only fair and young and good looking, but in a few cases are well advanced In years. The picture of the old bather shows the dean ot the clan. Though past seventy, this aged man frisks arouud in the surf like boy and says it does him a world of good. LOOKING GLASS VALLEY. This would be a good time for the county judge to view the road be tween the watering troughs, between Roseburg and Looking Glass. This road is a disgrace to Douglas county and those controlling the building and maintenance of roads. There will be a masque ball given under the auspices of the Grange, Friday night, February 11. Charles Williams and son, of Rose burg, spent a few days here last week visiting relatives. i.r. and Mrs. H. G. Klore visited Roseburg Saturday. Rev. Uncle Sam Bettis conducted the court to be illegally collected. Each year when taking vacations, I have paid the office help left in charge, out of my own personal funds. The last legislature transferred the tax collecting department from the sheriff's office to the treasurer's office thereby making it desirable for the taxpayers to keep a "trained man on the job." I have conducted this office on strict business principles. In the In terest of all the people, and if you want that kind of a county treasurer for the succeeding term I will be very grateful for your Influence and voto. (Paid Adv.) J, E.
