' LIBRARY CEMETERIES. Million! of Books Buried Awsy nd Navor Oponad. The Brillli inuseuin possesses Id all about 4.0OMXX) volumes. A year or two ago those In the reading xooio were carefully fine over and made to form a library completely up to date. Wheu this work was In progress the authori ties could uot And more than 00.000 books which were In use. Experi tnre therefore points to the fact that the proportion of live to dead or half dead bookH Lu this huge collection Is as 1 to 000. "You may assume," said the libra rian, "that of all the vast number of works that generations of men have Indited only UO.OOO remain alive. In this bulldlnc la a great Ironmongery of shelves, forty-two miles of books repose, and there are miles of volumes which no human being has ever opened and no buinan being Is ever likely to opun. There they rest apparently for gotten. "Sometimes an esoteric volume from the midst of this huge maze of shelves Is asked for by a student wno may have come from any part of the world to see some book which can be found only In the British museum. 8o that In the museum, unlike other libraries, no book can be Bald even to be abso lutely demised. "This differentiates the museum per haps from all other libraries In the world. The only other great collec tions of books which at all coinpeto with It In this sphere of cosmopolitan research ore the Blbllotheqiie Nation ale in Paris and the great itlonal li braries nt Berlin, Munich and Vienna. "Notwllhsaudlug this there arc acre and acres of books here which are un cut and which have never left their places on the shelves since tliey were placed on them." Exchnuae. Origin of tha vurtew. In the year (1iv.li afler King Henry's death, lu a synod, by the duke's an -tbority and attended by bishops, ab Dots and barons, it was ordered that a j bell should be rung every evening, al the bearing of which prayer should be offered and all the people should gel within their hoURes and hut their doors. This odd mixture of piety and police seems to be the orlein Of the fn ' moils and 'misrepresented curfew Whatever was Im object.
