It Is fortunate for some people Ihnt they do not have to pay real es tate taxes on their ensiles in uie air. Unsnhure Is receiving her share nt hmnnsneknrs. New people are In vesting In Douglas county real es tate every day. llnrdlv a day passes but either The Kvenlne News or twlce-a-week edition adds from one to five names tn Its roan ar list of snuscriners. There Is no use looking further when iho advertiser wantB results. This romblnation cannot be outclassed. There are rumors and rumors not of war but pertaining to the newspaper business in this city. Common gofnlp on the streets today Is to the effect that Darby Richard son, formerly publicity manager of the rtosehurg Commercial Club, Is negotiating for the purchase of the Review Publishing company. Wheth er or not the deal will bo consum mated The News does not know, but wo have 11 from good authority that Mr. Richardson has been "dickering" with the management of I tlin nforesnld paper slurp Hnturdny The other rumor is to the effect thnt Attorney J. A. Buehnnnn. editor of the Leader, a local wwklv publica tion, is soliciting his republican .friends for flnar.clnl support In an effort thnt his paper may be put on a substantial basis, "to advocate the principles of the republban part," and other things, among which may be stated the furtherance of the ed itor's personal aspirations to fill an cfflce at some not very far distant ilate. Great doings and the outcome -will be watched with Interest by the callery gods. Macadnm for certain streets has been definitely decided upon, and it Is the Intention of the city to get at the work immediately. The problem of crushed rock for the streets is, Jnowever, a questiou that confronts the council. The rock crusher thnt was purchased by the county and re cently put In operation apparently - lias all that it can do to supply stone for the county roads. A great deal of special road tax was voted last season, and highways leading to the city are being built up In n most satisfactory manner, therefore the county rock crusher is not likely to see many Idle moments and to expect any help from that source is a pro position hardly worth considering. To macadam the streets the city must have crushed roek, and under the existing circumstances the only thing left for the council to do Is to either buy a crusher for the city or. contract with some company or Individual for the necessnry material needed for tho streets that nre to lie macadamized this season.
