Wickersham notes that six classes in the class series are also open to community members, and there will be a summer series as well—a way to bring a learning opportunities to those who may not be able to commit to the Master Gardener program, as well as a program TheDallesChronicle.com introduction to those who may be interested in joining a future series. There is a drop- in fee of $10. “I think the Firewise Landscaping class is critical, as the climate and growing needs of our area continue to evolve. The Plant Problem Diagnosis is popular and was also helpful to me personally as a home gardener with plenty of ‘real life scenarios’ to practice on,” she joked. “And the Growing Berries course will be taught by a well-known berry crops spe- cialist,” she added. “As many home gardeners are adding berries and grapes to their landscape, I think this will be a beneficial and interesting class.” Wickersham resides in Stevenson, the community where she grew up. She enjoys hiking, visiting the mountains and spending time on the river with her hus- band, Jeff, and chil- dren, Jordan, 12, and Maia and Jenna, 9. All classes are held at the Hood River Valley Christian Church, 975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, and are taught by Oregon State University instructors. These classes were selected to be open to the community since Master Gardeners receive many questions on these topics at plant clinics during the growing season. To continue the Oregon State University Extension Service Master Gardener mission of sustainable gardening education for the community, these classes will be open to all. If you wish to participate in a class, just show up and pay the $10 drop-in fee. Cash and checks only. Coffee, tea and conversation with other gardeners happens before the class and at break. They offer counseling and meditation, educational assistance, life training, and long-term housing solutions, she added. “This organization works to assist one of our most vulner- able populations, and in turn helps families break the cycle of abuse, desperation and homelessness,” she said. Named as the 2020 Outstanding Philanthropist was Carna Schmidt. Schmidt is a founding member of the MCHF Women’s Giving Circle, and quietly supports hun- dreds of projects in the Gorge, Timmons said. “She is always willing to give her time as a volunteer and advocate for those in need,” said Timmons. Schmidt has also served as a Wasco County Economic Development Commissioner, on the Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation board, the Mid- Columbia Medical Center board of trustees and on the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center’s board as well.
