FALL HOLIDAY ISSUE 1983 PAGE 12 CH EM A W A A M E R ICA N Devereaux Leads Runners Cross Country interview with Marvin Dever’eaux Cross Country Coach The 1983 cross country team was a better team when com plete than what their statistics show. If we were to use the conference. A t the beginning of the sea son Chemawa established that, it was a team to be recognized and dealt with. Chemawa post ed wins over Woodburn, Cas cade, and Salem Academ y with the first three meets. The wins HUSTLE HUSTLE HUSTLE!!! team’s statistics to weigh out the ability o f the team, then the statistics would not pay atten tion to the team ’s ability. S ta tistically the team finished behind Salem Academy, Wood- bum and Cascade and right in the middle of our seven team were won by ChemaWa by the narrowest of margins. In the early stage o f the sea son, some of our top runners were not running up to their ability because the wind in their lungs wasn’t developed yet. Runners like Richard Bear- Outsprints child, Thomas Goggles, Leigh Malature and Mike never achieved their naif balance at half season. In this conference, runners have to be in shape, by running full force at the beginning of the season. Most of the other teams had run during the summer and had developed both pacing and style so that three miles was nothing to run. Chemawa didn’t have a top, runner that finished in the top five; but Chemawa ran in a group and the group ran in the top 30. The Varsity consisted of* Ansom Red Star, Phillip Whi teBuffalo, Thomas Goggles, Todd George, Richard Bear- child, Mike Wesley, Leigh Malature, Henry Goggles, Mike Johnson and Jay Eagleman. Jay Eagleman came to I Chemawa in shape and ready to run. He was our quickest runner, finishing about 7th in ; conference. Jay, however, never finished the season because of injury to his knee. 1I Phillip W hiteBuffalo and Thomas Goggles were opr second place runners. Phillip ran hard for us all season. His attitude toward running is go ing to make him hard to beat next year. Thomas got his wind about mid-season and came in second at the North Marion meet. If he hadn’t lost his wind S p ik e rs C h a lle n g e d ln B8 3" due to the injury at the end of the season, he would have corné in a lot stronger at the district meet. Richard Bearchild never got his wind till late in the season, but even then he finished high in the meets. Anson Red Star will be com ing back next year and th a t’s good for Chemawa. Anson’s got the heart of a runner. He start ed this year as one of our top runners, but as the season went on, misfortune fell upon his knee. Even though the swelling prevented him from running, h( came along to support tht team. Todd George was more of a sprinter than a distance pacer. Todd would always be in the thick of the race till the last mile, sometimes leading the race in the beginning, Todd was always true to himself. He was there running every day with the team and when he couldn’t, he ran on his own. Mike Wesley and Henry Gog gles are prime examples of what hard work can do. These two were moved up from J.V. not because we needed their endur ance. These two paced everyone on the top, making the top run ner run even harder in case they were passed while looking back. Leigh Malature will be com ing back to Varsity next year. He was moved up from J.V. to help the injured Varsity, but turned out to be one o f the top runners on the team. Mike Johnson was moved up from J.V. During the district meet Mike was hurt along with Anson Red Star, but they fin ished the whole race limping. Chemawa entered the district meet as the dark horse team Despite injuries, we finished fourth at the district meet. Boys J.V. consisted o f Tony Tonaskit, Greg Lamontt. Roland Blackweasel, George Bremmer and Duan White Hawk. These boys will probably move up next game, depending oh what they do this summer. The girls Varsity team con sisted of Delores Maganick Caroline Ivanoff, Kim Hen dricks, Paulines Napoleon, ano Karlene Rides-at-the-door. What hurt this years team was not ability, but the lack of equipment, consistency and in juries. — Marvin C. Dever’eaux, Coach Injuries Limit ’83 Football Season B y Audrey Jones This season’s Varsity Foot ball team members were cour ageous and ambitious. T he boys played hard this season, but couldn’t quite reach their goal. Although the Varsity team didn’t start off very well, they really gave Chemawa someth ing to cheer about during their final home game this season. They played tough and gave their opponents/ zero score points to go home w ith: the score was 44 to 0. The JV team started out suc cessfully by winning their first home game. They achieved this success o ne more during the football season. Injuries played a big role in this year’s season. Varsity foot ball player, Ken “ Killer” L itt leGeorge was injured all season and couldn’t play in any games. Paul Ballew, Eddie Bastian, Chester Mowitch, and Dwayne Edwards, who were seen as the Quarterback Ken LittleGeorge, injured during the football season, smiles for the camera dur ing halftime at a football game. team’s powerhouses, suffered serious injuries throughout thé season.
