The Chemawa Braves baseball team is off to a slow start. They have won 1. lost 1, and tied 1. Coach Shields, who recently replaced the legendary Larry Byers, had this to say about his team in a recent interview with our paper. 3rd Base - Leannie Van Pelt Weak all around but is improving probably the fastest of all the players.’ ’ SS - Ike Allen Rookie! H e ’s a good defensive player at times, his batting is kinda w eak!’ ’ Q. W hat about your new job, Coach? A. I enjoy it and I was very surprised when Coach Byers informed me of his decision. He told me the same time he told the team! ] Left field - Gay Gensaw H e ’s a very good hitter, aggressive, and just has to improve on fielding! ’ ’ Center Field - Arthur “ Coot’ ’ Fred Real weak at the bat only because o f lack o f experience. H e ’s our best outfielder! H e ’s a whiz on the base path.’ ’ Q. Speaking of the team, how are they looking up till now? A. W e are very inexperienced and coming rather slowly in an overall out look. Right field - Jack Johnson and Spencer Wilson. “ They share this job and are equal in both hitting fielding. Im proving.! ’’ Q. W hat are your strong points and weak points? Pitching - Roger Littlegeorge “ H e’s a good pitcher and has potential for a rookie.’ ’ A.Definitely our strong point is pitching. W e have two regular starters, Dean and Roger, who throw well but still have control problems. Our weak point has to be our hitting but even that is im proving. Our fielding also has to be worked on some more! I ’d like to at this time to thank the coach for his attention and will talk later on in the season to find out how the are doing! Being it is your first year, do you know anything about the Tri-River League, and where do you expect to be at the end o f the season? i Chemawa J .V . boys snuffed Am ity by 27 points Feb. 17, at the Am ity High School gym. Chemawa put on a good press early in the game and went on to a 41 to 19 halftime lead. M yron Boneshirt picked I, up 16 points in the first half. High j A . Being new to the league, 1 really don’t know what to expect. I hope to end up with a .500 season. Scio and Regis are the teams to beat. Catcher - Dean Jackson “ Dean is one o f our returning lettermen, we have 6 in all. He is a very good defensive catcher and provides leader ship. His batting is low, we hope to improve it .” this point. H e is hitting below average but is working at it ! ’ ’ nien to the State competition. Two placed Fernande 2, Sandoval, 106 lbs. placed eighth; Raymond Gensaw, 118 lbs. placed fourth. Leo Gensaw and Sammy Butterfly also wrestled at State. The team participated in 8 tournaments 6 dual meets and won 13 team matches. Team Members were: Sammy Butterfly, Captain; Leo Gen saw, Ray Gensaw, Fernandez Sandoval, Monte Munyan, M yron Jim , and Luke Brady. Rita Myers was score keeper. Wrestling requires more physical, emotional and psychological strength than any other sport. To be a good wrestler, each athlete needs physical body strength, outstanding endurance, knowledge of takedowns, moves and counters, emotional strength (determ in ation) and mat speed (wrestling quick ness). Considering all these demands, and the low level of social compensation attainable, the attrition rate is high. The starting and finishing of the match ceremony are both important to the sport. The reason that this is so important is that the real value of the sport comes with the winning and losing with pride. Wrestling teaches a valuable lesson about life: You can be up one day and down the next, yet productive working life must go on. Starting with 18 and working down to 7 athletes, the team sent four i The Braves played their last game of the season at MacLaren on February 24. The final score was Chemawa 87 and MacLaren 70. The high scorers were Kevin Nichols with 26, A rthur “ Coot” Fred with 17, and Alden Kickingwoman with 15. There were approximately 60 rooters to cheer the team on. The Braves had a winning season with 9 wins and 4 loses.
