CHEM AW A AM ERICAN VOLUME 68 CHEMAWA, OREGON, NOVEMBER 1971 NUMBER 1 S tu d en t C en ter Opened This year on the Chemawa campus there is a place for the students to go - our Student Center. “ The Student Center is a fu lfill ment of a dream of all the students at Chemawa Indian School,” commented our recreation advisor, “ and it has taken much planning and work of the entire Student Body to reach this g o al.” The cafe is managed by Tony Boyd. His job is to see that the w aitresses and student cooks do their job. Tony also takes care of the b ills , salarie s, and the buying for food. The recreation department consists of a dance floor, juke box, pool tables and various other gam es. It is man aged by the Chemawa R ecreation Club. John Cortez is in charge of the recreation departm ent. His job is to hand out change and see that the recreation areas are cleaned. There is also an outside patio where we can sit under shady umbrel las and eat. There is a small charge on the pool tables until they are paid for. Income for the juke box goes to pay salaries for the m aintenance of the recreation area. Student groups and clubs who want to use the Center can do so by reserv ing it in advance of the date wanted. The Student Center hours are: Mon day, Tuesday and Thursday - 3:45 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays it is closed. Friday, it is open from 3:45 to 9:45; Saturday .- 2:00 to 9:45; and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00. B re w er Big T h is Y e a r 130 Freshmen and Sophomores are living in Brewer Hall this year, which makes it the largest dorm at Chemawa. Mr. Kirk is the new dorm head this year. Mrs. Kemler, a dormitory aid at Brewer said, “ Brewer Hall will be the b est dorm at Chemawa this year, because there are nine new instruc tional aids and three old o n es.” Jacob Merculief and Martha Moses ruled over the 1971 Chemawa Homecoming. Jacob, a Junior, is an outstanding Cross-Country runner. Martha, a Senior, is on the Varsity Rally Squad. Guidance Dept. Busy “ We are too busy to know what everyone is doing,” Mr. Borer told a reporter who asked him what the guid ance department is doing. The guidance staff are busy fixing the stu d en ts’ files, getting permission slips in and counseling students who want it. They are also working on ideas for money-raising projects for the dorms. In addition, they are helping the new staff with their jobs at Brewer and Winona, helping with filming for Man and His Environment. They are also planning recreational programs and special field trips throughout the year for the students. The Social Services Department is working with transportation for the students who haven’t arrived yet. The Guidance department is in con tact with various Agencies to help find out what the students need and plan to do. Ouchi Takes Over Mr. Albert Y. Ouchi became the official Superintendent of Chemawa on September 19, 1971. He had been acting as Superintendent for Chemawa since Mr. Gordon Gunderson left last spring. Mr. Ouchi has five departments under him: Guidance, Academic, Ad m inistration, Security and Plant Man agement. Working with Mr. Ouchi, in an advisory capacity is the Advisory School Board. Mr. Ouchi says it’s great to be working at Chemawa, and he is happy the way things are working out. “ Iam very pleased with the students and think they are at Chemawa because they want to be and because they want an education.” Mr. Ouchi says that the rumor go ing on last spring about Chemawa being moved to Camp Adair is not true. Chemawa is, however, going to be improved in as many ways as pos sible.
