'W»»>’sK' fT!2«3«SÂSS THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN BRAVES PUSH JAYVEE NEWS On February 6th, the Braves were sue* cessful in overcoming Cascade, a team who has defeated them twice before in league actibn earlier in the season. In the first half Chemawa retired to the locker room with a nine point lead over the Cougars. The second half proved even more rewarding as the Braves increased their lead to 20 points and won the game with the final score of Chemawa 64, Cas cade 49. Sam Leavitt was high point man scoring for the Braves. Earlier in.the week the Stayton Eagles crept by the Chemawa Braves to win with a score of 64 to 46. The Eagles gained a strong lead despite Chemawa*s attempt, to stop them with a fu ll court press. Chemawa switched to man to man and full court press in the second half and managed to slow down the Eagles. At one point ih the game, the Braves came within seven points of their opponents, but when the Braves rebounders got into foul trouble the Eagles pulled ahead to win by 19 points. , , , On February 10th, the Braves .went to Oladstone to play their 7th league game of the season. Although Hubert.. Hopson scored 20 points, that wasn't good enough to beat the.Oladiators. Oladstone had 72 points and Chemawa had- 68 at the end of the game. .«This game left Oladstone in second place* In league standings and Chemawa in third. -**. • t I *. The Chemawa Jayvees squeezed past the Stayton Eagles on February 3rd in a very close league game by a score o f 45- 41. The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game and by half-time each had scored 20 points. They began the second half with a concentrated effort to break the tie. Chemawa managed to out score Stayton to take a 80-28 lead, but the Eagles then began hitting and when the buzzer sounded to end the game, the scoreboard showed Chemawa 41, Stayton 41. During the overtime period, the Braves scored 4 more points and held the Eagles scoreless to win the game by a scotjb of 46-41. Ed Vent was high point man for Chemawa, scoring 11 points. *. Later in the week the Chemawa Jayvees played the Cascade Cougars. In the first quarter the Braves held a slight lead of 13-12. Then the teams began to play real defense, but Cascade managed to get the lead to make the halftime score 20-19. In the second half the Cougars continued to increase their lead until they had scored 61 p oin ts to Chemawa's 47. Mike Williams scored 11 points to lead the Braves for the evening. . , SCORING CHAMP Sam Leavitt has been named scoring champion* Of the Capital Conference League this yeSr. H e made a total of 182 points in 10 games« for an average of 18.2 points per game. Hubert Hopson claimed third place in the League lineup. ‘ He made 140 points in the 8 league games he played for an average of 17.5 points per game. these words to say about Sam and Hubert: “ Chemawa High School w ilt lose two of its finest athletes when Sam Leavitt and Hubert Hopson graduated this spring, but the inspiration they've founded is lik ely to remain for quite awhile. • *»• GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM TO VIE FOR PLAYOFFS HELD MARCH 3 , The girls-basketball team has had aegreat season this year. I . ■ ■ . . • The girls basketball team has performed admirably in league action so far this season and now stands with a 5 won and 1 lost record. They have a chance for first place in the Western Division. Their first game wàs on February 5th, with Cascade, who is leading the Eastern Division. This game was their only non league game. They lost to Cascade by a score of 46 - 35. < . Later in the week, the Ramjets.of White Swan, Washington met Chemawa. .V ic ki Brunette scored 14 points to lòad thè girls to a 40 - 26 win. Another win was added, to their recòrd as the girls defeated Western Menno nite on February 9th by a score of 30 - 8.’* Sacred Heart posed a .problem for Che- maWa on February 12th, as they managed, tó score 31 points to Chemawa's 30, This game tiéd league stahding between Sacred Heart and Chemawa. . * * * ; f There are two mòre* games to be played' before League playoffs on. March * 3rd.' High scorer for the season has been Vicki Brunette, with a total of 49 points.
