THE CHEMAWA 5 A M E R IC A N RECREATION CLUB POPULAR WITH STUDENTS N av a jo S tu d e n t Explores A rt Field Pictured below is Eddie Lee, a Navajo student from Pine dale, New Mexico, who w ill be especially missed by the Business Education Department and the Recreation Club when lie graduates May 21st. Eddie has devoted many hours of extra time drawing holiday cards, certificates, programs and menues for the Business Education Department Graphic A rts C e n te r, as w ell as developing h is ta le n t with o il, acrylic and water paints in the newly established Arts and C ra fts C enter on the Chemawa campus. Eddie plans to attend the Sante Pe In s titu te of Ameri can Indian Art to pursue a career in commercial art. Under the direction of Mel vin Gamble, P resid en t, the Recreation Club sponsors many a ctiv ities on and o ff campus. The on-campus a c t i v i t i e s include weekly dances and movies, which are well, .at tended. Jay Tsinnijinnie and Joey Begishe make sure th a t the canteen is stocked With candy, coke and a wide selec tio n of refresh m en ts. The canteen is staffed by Recrea tion Club members and is open every night. Intramural sport s i s o n eo f the most popular a c tiv itie s of the Recreation Club. This year 20 Basketball teams, in two leagues, played a to ta > of 315 games. At the end of the season, tro p h y siw ere awarded to the winning teams. The Recreation Club co-spon sored,, with Brewer and McNary H alls, a DOnkey B asketball game which the students en joyed very much. Some innovations th is year have been intramural softball and a coed gym night. S u sie Angaiak Hensley spend evening r o lle r o f th e many a c tiv itie s . and Richard an enjoyable skating--one o ff-c a m p u s Roller Skating, Bowling and Swimming are the main o ff- campus a c tiv itie s sponsored by the Recreation Club. Ap proximately 1500 hours have been logged in each activity. The students have attended the C ircus and the Rodeo, at the Portland Memorial Col iseum and many functions that are too numerous to mention. Last, but not least, is the newest activity of the Recre a tio n Club. The A rts and Crafts Center is open, where you w ill find 30 to 40 s tu dents every night. On Monday and Thursday evenings between 5:00 and 9:00, lessons are given in A rts and C rafts, p a in tin g , p o tte ry making, s ilk sc re e n in g and iv o ry carving. The remaining nights are spent in lab sessions, where a student may obtain individual instruction. Eddie Lee, Ray Hosteen and Bobby James will be v isitin g the Sante Pe I n s t i t u t e of American Indian Art in the near future to in v e stig a te the p o ssib ility of attending next year. Our students w ill ex h ib it some of th e ir work at an Art Show in Woodburn on April 24, and at another in Eugene in May. There w ill be an a r t sale on the Chemawa campus on May 11. Paintings and? Alaskan Arts and Crafts will be sold.
