S t a f f and s tu d e n t s were delighted to receive a le t te r from Senator Bob Packwood, on F e b ru a ry 18, in which he congratulated Chemawa on i t s eighty-ninth anniversary. On February 25, Congressman A1 Ullman sent a telegram in which he extended h is good wishes for our success in the future and congratulated the school for i t s fine record. I t i s r e a s s u r in g to know t h a t our congressm en a re aware o f us and t h a t they could find time in th e ir busy sch ed u les to send us a few words of acknowledgement. Pete Alexie FOUR GIRLS TAKE DENTAL ASSISTANT TRAINING Four g irls have been getting a chance to find out whether o r n o t th ey would l i k e to ta k e t r a i n i n g as a d e n ta l a s s i s t a n t . They have been tra in in g in the Public Health Dental Office here on campus. The g i r l s work in teams of two and spend t h r e e hours each day in the Public Health Center. They receive tra in in g in such th in g s as o p e ra tin g the s t e r i l i z e r , handling the i n s t r u m e n t s , d e v e lo p in g x - ra y s , and a s s i s t i n g th e d e n tis t. Some o f the g i r l s have be come so enthused t h a t they a r e s e r i o u s ly c o n s id e r in g making a c a reer of i t . G ir ls who a re ta k in g th e tra in in g are Susan Grandson, Alice Mandregen, Madelyn Reft and Claudia Lind. I am glad t h a t I have had an o p p o rtu n ity to ta k e th e half-day vocational tra in in g course as a dental a s s is ta n t. I work three hours each morn ing before I begin my regular c lasses for the day. I have learned many th in g s and have become so enthused a b o u t d e n t i s t r y t h a t I am s e r i o u s ly c o n s id e rin g a career as a dental a s s is ta n t. Madelyn Reft AIR SCOUTS EXPLORE BOEING On February 27, 1969, 26 Air Explorer Scouts from Squadron 112, Chemawa, and twelve Air Explorers from Squadron 105, Salem, as one group went to the Boeing A irc ra ft Corpora t io n , Renton, W ashington. The two a d v is o r s were Mr. Robert Weeden and Mr. James Campbell. The group l e f t Chemawa a t 7:00 a.m. on a m ilita ry bus. The Scouts a rriv ed in Renton about noon and had lunch in downtown R enton. When we a rriv ed a t the Boeing p la n t, th e P erso n n el D ire c to r fo r th e company took the Scouts to a model mockup of the 747, which is the world’ s la rg e s t airplane. I t has two decks, the length i s almost th a t o f a fo o tb a ll fie ld , the wing span is about 196 f e e t, th e j e t i s almost 64 f e e t high and i t weighs 710,000 pounds. The a irp lan e can c a rry 370 p erso n s. The S c o u ts a ls o saw the Boeing 737, 727 and 720-B in various stages o f co nstruction. The Boeing f lig h t lin e was very in te r e s tin g . There the. Scouts saw several models o f1 the j e t s being te s te d before delivery to A irline Companies around the World. A fter they l e f t Boeing, they went to th e Seattle-T acom a In te rn a tio n a l, A irp o rt where they re c e iv e d c le a ra n c e to e n te r the ra d a r room where t r a f f i c c o n t r o l I s m ain ta in e d . Miles Cleveland The lib r a r y has been a busy place during rec e n t months.; Books have been added every Friday. This i s the day that; a l l the Freshmen and most o f th e Sophomores have c la s s ' time to come to the lib ra ry ? On oth er, days o f th e week, th e l ib r a r y i s open fo r a l l s t u d e n t s to do r e s e a r c h . U sually teachers send only 4, or 5 students a t a tim e, but o c c a s io n a lly a te a c h e r w ill bring the whole c la ss to work on sp e cia l p ro je c ts . This arrangement i s possible because o f the student assisT- ta n ts . There are two student l i b r a r y a id e s each c l a s s period. One takes care of a ll counter d u tie s and the other works in the workroom on new books o r o th e r ro u tin e l i brary ta sk s. A n o th e r in n o v a tio n i s a group o f Freshmen from the o r ie n t a t io n c la s s e s coming t o th e l i b r a r y one day a week to read magazines. They a r e r e q u ir e d to r e p o r t on t h e s e in t h e i r E n g l i s h c la s s e s so a l l s tu d e n ts are aware o f th e many magazines a v a ila b le in the lib ra ry for student use. The Oregon State Department o f Education has once a g a in given us about 250 books. These a re books which a re s e n t to them to re v ie w . We have r e c e iv e d th ese books fo r th re e years and th e y a re v ery p o p u la r with the stu d en ts. Miles Cleveland, Secretary Air Explorer Squadron 112 INCOME TAX RUSH Often you see someone tu rn ing t h e i r fo o ts te p s towards t h e B u s i n e s s E d u c a ti o n Department. Chances are th a t t h e y a r e g o in g f o r some Income Tax help. L a ter, you may s e e t h e same p e rs o n coming out with a long enve lope' in h is hand and a smile on h is fa c e . He i s an o th er lucky s tu d e n t who i s going to get a refund.
