Newspaper Page Text4 THE CHEMA WA AMERICAN FOOD PRESERVATION The 10 A1 Homemaking students went out to pick Italian purple and petite prunes on a plot near the cherry orchard along the railroad track. We had to walk all the way up there with our pots and pans? We carried a step ladder too. We got up on the ladder with a pan in one hand, holding onto the ladder and picking with the other hand, We had fun. We enjoyed eating the prunes tod. I think we ate more than we picked. Lorraine Pratt holding the pan. BASKET RACK PROJECT FABRICATION For a production project, Frank lin B. Sam (left) and Calvin P. Nez (right) designed and built five clothing basket racks for the girls P. E. classes. Over 380 parts and 800 welds were involved. The Paint Shop students spray painted the racks to match the dressing room decor. The Chemawa School Library is beginning its second year as a sep arate service of the school. Much has been accomplished and the ref erence departm ent now meets the requirem ents for school libraries«. The book collection is being in creased as rapidly as books can be processed. A card catalog has been added this Fall and about 50% of the books are now cataloged. We are receiving Portland and Salem daily newspapers, also the Tundra T i m e s and the Navajo Times. We also receiv'd about 40 magazines, most of which are listed in the Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature. Other magazines have been given by th e staff and are placed in the perm anent file if they are listed in the Readers’ Guide. We are especially pleased with the gift of the National Geo graphic Magazine from 1938 to the present. These are very useful ini the classes. Rena Davi§? grade 10, is working in the library morning and receiv ing vocational training. She I s now able to take over the desk work completely and to process the new books and is learning the proced ures of book «mLdnding. Other li brary assistants are Lucille Kill- bear, Sharon Velarde, and James Jackso&V The students are acquiring the “library habit” and are making it a part of their school life. Circula tion is increasing every week. CANNING THE FRUIT: Lucy Pitka, Bar bara Manycattle, Katherine Burnell, Sarah Bailey. MR. SMITH RECEIVES AWARD Loyal N. Smith, a vocational shops teacher, at the Chemawa In- dain School received a Bureau of Indian-Affairs award and was pre sented a check, for $100. This award was in recognition for the outstanding work Mr. Smith has been doing with the Boy Scout or ganization on campus. Pictured here is Mr. W alters, superinten dent, making the presentation.
