EXPLORER SCOUTS OVERNIGHT CAMP Explorer Scout Troop 123 spent a weekend camping in the. Willam ette National Forest. Fishing, swim ming and hiking made, up the re creational program. Cooking our meals was a lot of fun. We cooked lots of pancakes, ham, hunter’s stew, cocoa, and oth er goodies. The brisk air and exer cise made us very hungry. Even a burnt pancake tasted good. Though we had a truck for trans portation, each scout had to carry his own bedding, some food and utensils, extra clothing and a sleep ing bag. We had made some pack frames to carry these things. They bebame a little heavy after we hiked a few miles. Mr. Smith, Mr. Holmes/ and Mr. Burright helped some of us who were becoming tired. The students and faculty were very proud of the fine art exhibits which were displayed by the stu dents of Chemawa at the recent State Fair held in Salem. Winners were: Art, mixed media — Eugene Bahe, 1st place,-Navajo scene/ Henry Barber, 2nd place, still life; Emma Beaver, 3rd place, still life. Arts and Hobbies — Davis Towksjhea, 1st place, tile ..table; Ronald Smoke, 1st and 2nd places, small and large tile table; Ray mond Yazzie, 1st plaqe, 2 inlaid tile table pieces. C H E M A W A STUDENTS AR E GOOD AM BASSADORS Sharon Velarde and James Jack- son accompanied by Mr. Hippie vis ited the Brush College Elementary School, Salem, Oregon, on Septem ber 23. Both students spoke briefly to the 60 fourth grade students of the school. After telling about their home life they were bombarded with questions by the enthusiastic little fourth graders. Both Sharon and James were amazed at some of the strange con cepts and ideas that these students had about Indian people. — Sharon Valarde JOB'S D A U G H T E R S SPO N SO R C L U B Bethel 59 of Job’s Daughters will start its third year as sponsor of a club consisting of girls from Mc Bride Hall. Rosemary Mead of Sa lem ;is the adviser. Mrs. Mead will be at Chemawa with 10 Job’s Daughters members the 4th Satur day of each month. The program this year will be extended to in clude the training of a marching group which will .march between the halves of the basketball games. Part of the group will have differ ent projects such as gift making, social conduct, candy making, etc.
