The following students received awards of wrist watches at the Sun day evening guidance meeting on May 5, 1963. The awards were made for progress made during the year in citizenship and cooperation. Special award for greatest con tribution tô dormitory living: Julia Dish. Special award for outstanding girl of the year: Jane Greist. Mitchell Hall—Harry Begay, E rn est Johnson, Joe Begishie, Thomas L. Yazzie. Special award for greatest contri bution toward dorm itory living: Raymond Hosteen. Brewer Hall—Peter Nevag, Earl Wulf, John Richards, Leon Kiana. Honorable Mention: Clifford Damion, Moses Edwards, Jack Won- gitillin, Donald Johnson, John Ahn- gasuk, George Onalik. HANSEL AND GRETEL On April 27th the girls who had sung for graduation and the girls who had sung at the banquet went to Hillcrest Girls’ School to see the play Hansel and Gretel. Some children from the Blind School were at Hillcrest to hear the program. There were some children from Fairview Sschool there, too. Orlinda Johnson READING AWARDS The following Junior High stu dents received certificates for hav ing read twenty books or more: Larry Larkin, Solomon Slowoko, Martin Oktollik, Elaine Haelsher, Linda Boyd, Irene Gorman, Ander son James, Sinka Littlefish, Grace One, Tomy Shorty, Lucy Evan, Brenda Tokeinna, Sharon Velarde, Alice Rose Zahne, Ethel Moses, Shirley David, P h i l l i p Henry, George Onalik, Alice Abraham, and Martha Moore. DINNER The members of the Student Council chose China as the place to have our dinner. In China City you may be served either Chinese food or American food. Thé dinner was perfect, we had everything from place cards to fine food. The Executive Committee acted as hosts and hostesses. Our guests included Mr. and Mrs. W alters, Mr. Marshall, Mr. McDonald, Miss Sea- ver, Mr. Hippie and our sponsor Mrs. Nell Brannon. I Student Council President, Ar thur Ahkinga, introduced Mr. Wal ters, who talked to us. We had a very nice time and a big surprise when over the public address system we heard, “Happy Birthday,” being sung to Lorraine Castiano, whose birthday it was. A birthday cake was served to Lor raine. We wish to express our appreci ation to Mrs. Brannon for helping us to arrange, for the marvelous dinner and the enjoyable evening that we all had. Jim Lewis, Jr. Treasurer of Student Council During the month of April the Junior High students had a spell ing contest. The contest consisted of oral and w ritten spelling words. The winners Were the ones making the highest ratings. In the ninth grade. Marie Chikoyak, first, and Gary Mills, s e c o n d; Elizabeth S p e e m ,first and Edith Kaigelak, second, for one room in the Eighth grade; Cyrus Savetilik, first and A rthur Ahkinga^ for the other eighth grade room; Louis J. Mor ton and Larry Larkin tied for first in one division of the seventh grade Marie Chikoyak, first, and Gregory Semaken, second, for the other division of the seventh grade. Helen Rock GIRLS RECREATION SPEECH CONTEST Grace One, Reporter A Jack tournam ent has been com pleted at McBride Hall. Several teams played. Phyllis Yazzie was declared winner and champion. Sec- on place went to Elsie Begay and third to Maggie Armboy. Betty Yazzie was the consolation winner. Bethel Chapter 50 of the Salem Job’s Daughters has conducted a club for McBride girls the fourth Saturday of each month. Mrs. Ed ward Johnson is sponsor. The April meeting was the highlight of the year when the girls were driven to Bush Park to attend a cook-out Games and the cook-out were en joyed by forty girls. Winona Hall girls honored their graduates at a coffee on Sunday night following graduation. The liv ing room of Winon awas decorated with spring flowers. Coffee and tea were served in the dining room by members of the House Council. Later there was dancing in the court. Mr. and Mrs. Frederickson were guests. SPELLING CONTEST During the month of April all of the Junior High students entered a speech contest. We memorized poems th at we ourselves, chose from books. We were judged on memorization, voice and expres sion. The ninth grade winners were: Calvin Brown and Ira Isaac. The eighth grade winners were: Henry Barber, Jane Lind, Maggie Pete and A rthur Ahkinga. The sev enth winners were: Grace One, Sinka Littlefish, David Westcoast and Larry Larkin. Helen Moses BOYS WIN TROPHY The ninth g r a d e boys were awarded7 a trophy at the guidahce awards program Sunday night. They received the award because they had compiled the most points from participating in the intra m ural tournam ents this year. We had been the “underdogs” but started gaining in recent weeks from volley ball and pool compe tition. Andrew Frankson accepted the trophy for the class.
