2 THE CHEMÀWA AMERICAN First Year Students List Year's Learning Leathercrafters In Ford Contest Pupils in Mrs. Harvey Starling’s class wrote on the topic, W hat This year some of the hoys will enter leathercraft articles in the industrial arts contest which is put on by the Ford Motor Company. There will be cash prizes, certifi cates, and publicity for the winners of this contest. C h em aw a H as D o n e fo r Me T his Y ear. Following is a composite of the lists of Mary Ann Silas, Lo- rèna Lynch, Paul Yazzie, John Billie, Jr., Carl Curley, Kee Tom Lee, Carl McClellan, and George Mark: Students Learn In Shop This is my first year at Chema wa. I learn hère in my classroom, at shop, at the building, outside playing, and wherever I go. I learned how to take care of myself. We go to shop every day from 2:05 to 3:15 o’clock. We have learned many things in the shop. We don’t just go over there for fun. We go there to learn. Our shop teacher is Mr. Moore. He helps us when we need help. The first thing we learn is the names .. of the tools. We have to learn to measure with rulers. We made many things in shop. I learned how to be clean. I learned how to use good man ners.-. I have learned how to get along with other children. Girls Make Many Things The girls in my class go to home economics five times a week. In our class we are making blouses. Instructor Talks About Batteries On March 25, Mr. George Speed came to talk to the eighth graders about batterie^ He helped ua to understand them. I understand that a battery has many parts. It has crossed wires at the top which direct the elec tricity; lead plates that are sep arated by some material that will not conduct electricity ;- and an electrolyte made of ten parts of water and one part of sulphuric acid, that conducts electricity. I understand that water in the electrolyte needs to be replaced, and that batteries can be recharged if they are not dead. I understand that you can tell how good a bat tery is by the weight.
