4 The Chemawa American Boxers Win at Eugene In the third week of November Mr. Ashcut called for boxers to turn out. Twelve boys with weights irom 105 to 160 pounds reported. One week later they entered the Pacific (’.oast AAU tournament, losing out three in the quarter-finals and one in the semi-finals. Another week passed by, then they journeyed to Eugene. There they scalped their opponents 5-3, Richard Burke winning a sensational TKO. On January 10 they go hack to Eugene and on Jan uary 11 to Woodburn. Standouts are Carrol Gensaw, Curtis Stacona, vVillie Gensaw, Ray Pete, Richard B”rke, Kenny Sain, Fred Whitewolf and David Shellal The Football Banquet On December 12 the football banquet was held in Hawlev hall. Those who attended were Mrs. Brannon, Mr. Aaron. Mr. Sanders, Mr. Julian Smith, Mr. Hampton (our football coach ). Mr. Vandenort (our basketball coach), Mr. Abell (the toastmaster), and. of course, the football players. The banquet was prepared and served by the senior girls under the direction of their home econ omics teacher, Mrs. Lena Cronk. Was that meal of Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, buttered peas, gravy, hot buns with butter, milk and coffee with apple pie good? It makes the mouth water even to think of it. The banquet was followed by talks, stcries and jokes by Mr. Abell, the other guests, the coaches and Captain Joe Jay Pinknam. The Jamboree On December 7, a jamboree was held at the Wil lamette University gym. The following schools were represented: Chemawa, Jefferson, Gervais, De troit, Aumsville, Turner, Gates, Mills City, St. Paul, Sublimity and Hubbard. Each school gave its school yells and songs. St. Paul won a trophy for giving the best yells. Our Chemewa basketball team played against Jefferson and won the game the w ith score of 14-2 in favor of Chemawa, winning the best team trophy. The basketball team is making a good showing in the ffB” league. A full report will be given in the next issue. Rickards Visit Former Chemawa Employees on Holiday Trip Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rickard and Jean spent the Christmas holidays in California. They spent Christ mas day in Chico with Mrs. Rickard’s father and sister. Going on to San Francisco they visited. Miss Rosalind Cruise and Miss Stella Wentzel, former Chemawa teachers. Miss Cruise is now connected with the Veterans Administration and Miss Wentzel and her brother are operating a radio repair shop. They also learned that a former barbering student here, Rudy Maysee, is employed as a hail stylist at the Emporium, one of San Francisco’s largest depart ment stores. On the return trip the Rickards spent New: Year's Eve with Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Gastineaii and family at Ashland, Oregon. Mr. Gi.stineau was a former coach at Chemawa. Christmas at Winona Christmas Eve at Winona was a very happy one, The girls ah came down to the living room and with their very best manners. We had guests (that's what the manners were for.) The freshmen girls put on a play for the benefit of the guests and the girls. Mrs. Weigel ami Mrs. Sanders were in charge of the entertainment. The girls were kept in suspense a long time waiting for old Santa, but finally the old fellow came. You could hear him a mile off. Af ter he gave out the presents, everybody was happy. Christmas Musical Program On Friday evening, December 28, under the di rection of Miss Sylvia Dorwtiler, an excellent mu sical program was given in the high school audi torium. The theme was Christmas Carols down through the ages. Boysand girls from sixth through die twelfth grades who participated may- feel justi fiably proud of their work in this activity. Auto Mechanics Visit Salem The auto mechanics went to Salem on an educa tional trip. First they went to the National Batterv factory in West Salem. They went through the place and found out how a batteiy is put together and how one is repaired. Then they went to see the Ford dealer at the Valley Motor company. This firm buys and sells Fords. We learned a great deal from this visit.
