THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN A ro u n d the Campus Mrs. Sadie Mitchell has gone to W ashington, D. C., to visit her daughter. Mrs. Jessie O hm an is in O m aha, N ebraska, for her "leisure hour." Mrs. McDowell is substituting a t W inona hall as m atron while Mrs. Peacher is in Missouri visiting her home folks. Miss Bernice Tupper h as recently transferred to Flandreau, South D akota, to continue duties similar to the ones she filled here as m atron of McBride hall. Miss Tupper w as splendid in her efforts here a n d the heartiest of w ell-w ishing goes with her from all of us. Supt. Evans is on sick leav e a t M alad City, Idaho. Early May saw the sixth g rad e losing Mrs. L aura Burdick as their instructor a n d acquiring their first m ale teacher, Mr. C. M. Combs by nam e. Mrs. Burdick returned to her home- in W isconsin a n d Mr. Combs fin ished the school year. Jane Jensen, former laboratory technician at the hos pital a n d sister of Mrs. Burdick an d Ruth Jensen, re signed her position a n d joined her sister in returning to W isconsin. Mrs. Brannon is on an n u a l leave a t S an ta Fe, New Mexico. Another dent in the cam pus quorum w as m ade w hen the W alworth family moved to their ranch near Lyons, Oregon; The b est w ishes of the staff go with them to their new location. Mr. W alworth w as cam pus electrician a n d shop instructor. Coach Bob D aggett assum ed the duties of h ead m entor in b a se b a ll a n d track on April 12 a n d had a m entionable seaso n in b o th sports. Coach D aggett is currently attain in g his M. A. d egree in education at W illam ette a n d will live on the cam pus the rem ainder of the course. The R. M. Tisinger family left on May 29 for a v a c a tion a t their home in Virginia. Mr. a n d Mrs. R. G. H enderson an d A. B. McLaughlin of the cam pus store returned recently from the O dd Fellows a n d R ebecca convention a t Medford, Oregon, w here Mr. McLaughlin w as elected G rand Junior W ar den of G rand Encam pm ent of Oregon. Mr. a n d Mrs. A ngus a n d son Donnie visited on June 9 with Mr. Angus' brother, principal of N ew berg union high school, a n d his family. The Henry Abell family spent several d ays last w eek a t the coast. Mrs. Ella Swink enjoyed a brief visit Friday, June 7, with her daughter, M abel, en route by car through the Redwoods to S an ta B arbara, California. The S hepard family is vacationing in Alaska. Phillip M. Bull a n d wife M artha of Crow Agency, M ontana, w ere enrolled a s students during the school year. Phillip w as a w ar veteran a n d received his di plom a with this y ear's g rad u atin g class. Mr. Erling Benson, h e a d of the shops departm ent for the p ast year, h a s resig n ed a n d after a n extended trip into C a n a d a a n d the e astern p art of the United 3 CAMPUS VISITORS Recent cam pus visitors have provided "geographi cal hues" m any a n d varied. Among the notable: Mrs. Nels Jensen of Hudson, W isconsin, a n d Miss H endretta Jensen of Whitefish, M ontana, mother an d cousin of Miss Ruth Jensen. Lt. Kenneth Seaw right (Ch C U. S. Navy) of San Francisco, brother-in-law of Nurse Seawright. Mr. Herbert Detrick of Newberg, Oregon, who has come to visit his wife, Mrs. Lulu Detrick. G ene Kerr, potential W illamette U. freshman, from Molise, M ontana, visiting Coach Daggett. Dr. J. H. Hendry of the Tacom a hospital attended the food handlers' meeting. Mr. a n d Mrs. Frank Peratrovich of Klawock, Alsaka, visited friends here. Mr. Peratrovich grad u ated from C hem aw a in 1916 a n d is a m em ber of the A laska ter ritorial legislature. Mr. an d Mrs. Julian Smith of 999 Locust street, S a lem, w ere guests on the cam pus for commencement. Mr. Robert Thomas of 2124 N. W. Flanders, Portland, visited the Shepards during the Commencement w eek end. G. W. Cook, former principal of Tule Lake C enter high school, a n d family, a n d Mr. an d Mrs. O plund of Council, Idaho, w ere recent visitors of Mrs. Bristow a n d Miss Morse. Mrs. Nell Ham ilton of San . Francisco w as recent guest of her sister, Miss Morse. AG BOYS HOLD BARBECUE As a finale to their activities of the year, the Ag boys held a b arbecue the day following their an n u al stock a n d grain judging contest. A 300-lb. calf w as butcherecl b y the boys a n d roasted in a closed pit over a deep bed of coals in true barb ecu e style. This along with some typical picnic food w as enjoyed b y some 200 Ag boys a n d their guests. A perfect day, a gam e of soft ball, three horseshoe playing sets, arid a large campfire a s evening ap proached all contributed to a good time. FOOD HANDLERS FED BY F. E. U. The C hem aw a F. E. U. entertained the visitors to the food handlers convention with a salm on b ak e a t Silver Creek Falls park on the evening of June 6. Those re sponsible for the delicious food w ere Mr. Rube S and ers, who saw to it that the salm on w ere b ak ed a s only he can b ak e them, Sgt. Hauser, Miss Goings an d Rube Sanders Jr. They a n d their assistants p repared a m eal that will long b e rem em bered. States Mr. an d Mrs. Benson will m ake their home in Morro Bay, California.
