Picard Was Grid High Scorer Calvin Picard led the Indians through the season with a total of 57 points. He ended up in fourth place on the Duration League scoring list. Follow ing Picard is Chet Ashman with 32 points, Fred Kalama 18 points, Terry Francis 14 points, and Fred Miller and Joe Pete with 6 points each. The Chemawa Indian football team traveled to Silverton on Thanksgiving Day to defeat the highly favored Foxes 19-6. After a 60 yard drive Terry Francis tore through the Silverton line early in the second quarter to score Chemawa’s first touchdown. Calvin Picard’s try on the conversion failed by inches. In the latter part of the second period Chet Ashman passed from Chemawa’s own 45 yard line to Calvin Picard, who dodged and twisted his way to a touchdown. The third period found Chemawa driving deep into Silverton territory. Then came Fred Miller on an end-around play from which he ran 20 yards to score. Calvin Pic ard plunged through the line for the extra point. The Silverton Foxes made their only touchdown of the day on a pass. Every team member had his heart and soul in the game, for it was the last for some of them and they knew it; especially the four seniors, Calvin Picard, Terry Francis, George Miller and Fred Mil ler. With this last game Chemawa closed its season, not forgetting the turkey dinner and dance to add to a wonderful Thanksgiving and successful season. Football Banquet 1945 Hawley hall was a very busy place the afternoon of December 12. The senior girls were busy prepar ing for the football banquet that evening. It was a new experience for many of them and a pleasent one. Under the direction of Mrs. Cronk, they planned and made ready for the cooking and serving of the banquet. Fruit cocktails were served, then the main course which consised of swiss steak, gravy, mashed pota toes, buttered peas and carrots, waldorf salad, coffee, rolls, jam, butter, pineapple upside down cake. Coach Thompson, the master of ceremonies, called on guests and some of th c players to say a few words after dinner. After serving, the senior girls sat down to sample the meal themselves. The girls and Mrs. Cronk were called in and congratulated on the dinner they had prepared for the occasion. The alma mater was sung and everyone left after a pleasent evening. • Scores and other data on the rest of the 1946 bas ketball games will be covered in the next issue.
