THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN News Briefs Irving Shepard visited his brother and family here during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Clinginpeel are transferring to the Phoenix Indian school. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weigel have moved from Salem to the Chemavva campus. Sgt. Arnold Holmes, son of Mr. Abe Holmes, visit ed his parents here during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Evans entertained at open house Wednesday evening, December 27. Mrs. Lena Cronk entertained a group at bridge on Thutsday evening, December 21, at Kola Tepee. Mr. Vier Cleek his accepted a transfer to Pine Ridge, Dakota. Mr. and Mrs. Cleek left Chemavva December 11. Mr. and Mrs. ('loud and two children of North Dakota visited our campus December 31. They gave a program of songs for the students. Paul Svinth visited our campus during the holi days while spending a few days with his mother in Salem. Paul is employed in Tacoma, Washington. Mrs. Leona Nopp and Mrs. Hickman entertained for Mrs. Tieceahkit with a shower. The party was delightful and jolly. It was held at Mrs. Nopp’s home in Salem. Mrs. Brannon and Mrs. Morrissey entertained for Miss Chambers at a tea as an announcement party. A shower for Miss Chambers was given in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tisinger. Hostesses were Mrs. Ev ans, Mrs. Tisinger, anti Miss Scott. Peter Hauser, IJSMC, visited his mother iiere during early December. Peter has been in California for several months, and was expecting to return for overseas duty. Wauseka Hauser, also of the Marine Corps, visited his mother during December. He has returned to duty in California. Ag Barn-Warmer Party The agricultural group sponsored a very success ful party in the gymnasium on Friday evening, Dec ember 15. The students who had not enjoyed our was mentioned in dispatches of January 1944 as having charged a Jap machine gun nest alone, w iping out the gun crew with grenades. Louis was a student here for three years and has many friends throughout this area. Sanford Beaudry, a brother, is in the Marine Corps. 3 all-dancing parties had fun this time for there were several forms of amusement. No “wallflowers” at this party. One-half of the gymnasium was used for playing games, and the other half for dancing. Music was furnished by a fourpiece orchestra. Table games were played on the stage. Decorations were harness, baled hay, cornstocks, and sacks of grain, complete with two calves, pigs, and chickens. Notes from the Ag Class Pruning of the peach orchard is finished and the boys are now working on the apple trees. Most of this pruning consists of heading back the tops of the trees as the trees are too tall to either pick or spray efficiently. Classwork recently, besides pruning, has consisted of study and practice in culling laying hens. Six of the boys have fattening pig projects, three have calf projects, one a dairy cow project, and the Ag class has charge of 50 hens in the small poultry house. Christmas Program The third grade presented a lovely program on December 22 in the auditorium. The program told the Christmas story of the birth of Christ. Senior Practice House Senior girls are now getting some practical ex perience in keeping house. Four girls are in the house for three weeks. Each girl has a turn at each duty such as cook, chore girl, housekeeper, and hostess. The senior girls are enjoying this experience and have shown cooperative spirit which makes the plan run smoothly. Mrs. Cronk is sponsor of this activity. J Judy Alden
