from the Shops and Classes E lectric S hop : Mr. Metzger, assisted by the elect ric shop boys, went to work and fixed up their shop. They painted and rearranged it, putting linoleum on the floor, and nowthey have one of the cleanest and neatest-looking shops on the campus. The boys in the paint shop are busy refinishing furniture for various buildings. They are now start ing to paint the playroom in McBride Hall. Outside of this they are kept busy on various repair jobs a- bout the campus. George Walters, who now is in charge of the shoe shop, is very busy with his boys repairing Brewer Hall shoes. rhe following grade school boys have finished their sewing and have started nailing: Floyd Wilson, Fred Anderson, and Frankie Weaskus. The outstand ing boys are Robert Wesley and Eddie Hobucket. The machines are working very well. The second grade, under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Clingengpeel, has just finished their unit on “Good Health and Good Manners.” Many interesting booklets and posters have been made and all the youngsters are very enthusiastic in carrying the health program into the unit we are now working on—"Helping Uncle Sam.” Big plans are being made for their school garden. An army of Junior Com mandos has been organized to help in collecting scrap and in keeping the school grounds clean. William Miller is captain of the boys and Louida Ingawanup is captain of the girls. Phe junior English class has completed a unit on "How to Use the Library,” under the direction of Miss Ruth E. Morse. The sophomore class has not as vet finished this unit. Both classes have stud- J ied the different parts of books, care of books, mending, types of library material, the Dewey Deci mal System of classification of books, card cata log, reference material, and the use of magazines. They end the unit by making a book of their own on some subject of their own choice on which con siderable research has been done. Following is a fairly typical letter written by stud ents to their homes. Contrast it with the very nice letter that follov. s it in the matter of interest, form, and readibility: Smile when you read this. Dear Mom:-- I have some time to spare so I thought I would just drop you a few lines to say helio. I’m in fine condition and hope you are the same way. Tell even body I said hello. How’s everybody down your way. Hope fine. How is aunt Mary and Johnny and uncel Tom. Jack said to tell you he said hello. He said to send him some money. How is the weather down their. I hope just fine. The weather up heres been raining for some day, just couple of days it has been good. We had a dance last night, the music is a music box and we sure had fun. Well I haven’t no more time so I must come to a close. News is scarce up here. Well goodby now. Be seeing you. With love P. S. Answer as soon as you can send me some mon ey. ✓ Dear father, Hello. How are you? I hope you are fine. I am. So are _______ , _______ , and _______ . I got your letter and money. _______ and _______ got theirs too. Thanks for the money. They are going to have their first baseball game with Canby. They had their first track meet here. We won too. I don’t know what the score was but I know we won because they told us that we did. They are going to box tonight in the gym here .They are going to box with Woodburn. Two of my table mates are going to box. Their names are _______ _______ and_________________ . They boxed down to Woodburn last time and our boys beat their boys. I had some fun boxing with one of my freinds. I am doing okay in school. I am still in the sev enth . Last night before school was out our teacher said we couldn’t go home if we never had all our work through we woidd have to stay in and finish it. I never finished my geography so I thought I would have to stay but she let me go. Every Wed nesday we go over to the grade school and change library books. Here is a list of some I read from the high school library: Son of Tarzan, Wapiti Pete, Tarzan, Broken Fang, On Jungle Trails, Pygmy Ar row, Son of the Iroquois, Stories of Brave Dog’s, Haunted Airways, Lone Bull’s Mistake, Amon«; the Indians, Lad a dog, Bambi’s Children, Children of the Covered Wagon, Knute Rockne, Star an Indian Pony, Buffalo Barty and many others I have read this year. I liked most of them. I can read pretty fast. Will you come after me or send me some money to come home on? Our teacher said school would (Continued on page 4)
