Summary of Sport Activities
Hill Military Meet
Chemawa finished in the top division in the meet
with 25 other high schools which was held in Port­
land last month.
The highlights of the meet were the pole vaulting
aces, Cornelius Warmerdam, holder of the present
pole vaulting mark of 15 ft. 7 and 1-4 in., and Earle
Meadows, former U. S. C. star and former holder
of the pole vaulting record.
Les Steers, holder of the present high jump mark
of 6 ft. 7 and 1-8 in. also staged an exhibition before
a large crowd.
The Chemawa relay team consisted of Harrison,
Youngman, Clerking, and Walters.
Chemawa Cindermen Noses Silverton
The Chemawa Indian trackmen defeated the Silver
Foxes by a narrow margin last Thursday on the In­
dians’ cinders.
The 880-yard run was won by Youngman, click­
ing the watch at 2 minutes, 24 seconds, Other events
won by the Indians were: the 440-yard run, taken
by McMeal in the slow time of 1 minute, 1 second.
The high jump was taken by "Bud” Edden, jump­
ing at the height of 5 ft., 6 in. Don Williams was
tied for first place in the pole vault at 11 ft. He al­
so won first place in the javelin. The shotput was
taken by Whitford, tossing the 12 pound weight 39
ft. 4 in.
The mile relay was easily taken by the Indians’
team, consisting of Youngman, "Greg” Rice, Harri­
son, and Walters.
Buckaroos Down Chiefs
In a Big-nine clash at Chemawa, the Molalla Buck­
aroos defeated the local Braves.
The lack of experience showed up in the first four
innings, with the Chiefs making many errors and
the Buckaroos taking advantage to move up to a lead
that the Braves could not overcome.
The starting mound men for the Chiefs were
"Pomp” Williams and "Curly” Davis, who tried to
hold the visitors on even terms. The honors went to
"Little” Skahan who got two singles and one double
in four trips to the plate.
The game ended with the Chiefs on a very short
end of a 12 to 1 score.
Chemawa Nine Loses
The Chemawa baseball team lost to Woodburn
in a very good game at the Bulldogs’ home field
on Tuesday afternoon with the score 9 to 6.
"Curly” Davis was the starting pitcher for the
Braves and did well in keeping the Braves in the
game. The score was close all the way. The second
pitcher for the Indians was "Lou” Beaudry, who
also did very well.
There was one three base hit made by the In­
dians and some double plays, the Indians played
very well.

Miss Semanski recently left for California for a few
days vacation,
Former Chemawa Alumni in the service are Stanley
Wilder, f40, and Louis Yellowmule also class of f40,
stationed at Camp Roberts in California.
Five seniors and three juniors have enrolled in
the welding course.
More C.C.C. students are expected to come and
take welding.
Charles Williams and George Stensger, who passed
their welding test in Salem, have recently been em­
ployed at the Portland Ship-yard.
While Mr. Sheinost was taking First Aid in Salem
last week, the seniors were in charge of McNary hall
during the evening. Their work was appreciated very
much.
Many of the welders who have secured jobs in var­
ious ship-yards were visitors over the week-end.
The picture show, "One Foot in Heaven,” was
given in the auditorium Saturday evening, April 4.
Jimmie Alexander, f40, is in service at Camp San
Louis Obispo, California. Corp. Adam Bearcub, e40,
is stationed at Army Air Corps., Shepherd Field,
Witchita Falls, Texas.
On the evening of April 6, Dr. Faxon, Mrs. Rick­
ard, Mrs. Pepper, and Mr. Mason were hosts to a
bridge party held at Dr. Faxons’ house. High score
was held by Miss Munsell and low score was held
by Mr. Parkhurst,
The employees have planted a victory garden with
Mr. Bowman responsible for issuing of the plots to
the employees, and also to students who will join
also with the program.
Everything is coming along fine and preparations
are in “full swing” for the pageant which is to be
held on May 19 and 20, of this year.
