------- ■ ---------; 8 = ------- Summary of Sport Activities Salem Vikings Massacre Indians The Viks of Salem high rambled as they liked to a 40-0 victory over the Chemawa Indians on Sweetland Field last Friday, October 25th. It was the fifth straight win of the year for the Salem preppers. Chemawa did not furnish much opposition, since they were outweighed about twenty pounds to the man. On the open ing kick-off Salem marched 77 yards in 11 plays for the first touchdown, with Pearmine plowing the final 20 after snaring Simmons’ pass, hurled 20 yards from the Chemawa 40 yard line. Che mawa penetrated no further than the Salem 27 yard line, and that ended Chemawa’s scoring threat. It was just no competition for the Viks, and they remain unbeaten in the race for the State football championship. Independence Bows to Braves Rebounding back from their defeat by Salem, Coach “ Bunny” Bennett’s Braves won their first victory of the season when they defeated Inde pendence 7-0. The game was evenly matched until Chemawa got a“ break” when Saluskin, right tackle of the Indians, blocked the Hopsters attempted punt on the 1-yard line, and Beaudry, -sub-halfback, car ried the ball over for the only touchdown and al so for the extra point. The game was played on the Independence gridiron. The next game for the Braves is with Tillamook Cheese Makers on Sanders’ Field, Nov. 8. “ Old Fellows” to T ry Luck The boys that could not participate in high school competition are forming an All-Star team to be coached by “ Lefty” W ilder, onetim e star, in his days, and former coach. “ Lefty” was sur prised to see some of his former stars and players turning out again. Boys that turned out for the all- star football team are the following: Stanley W il liams, last year’s varsity end is at right end; “ Jiggs” W hitford, slim and wiry right tackle, who played for coach W ilder’s team a couple of seasons as a reserve; ‘ ‘Swede Black Jack’ ’ W ilder, short chubby little fellow, is at right guard; at center, “ Lefty” has big Bearcub, who also played on W ilder’s team fo rtw o seasons; at left guard he has “ Dave” Halfmoon, fast charging guard, who pulls out of the line and runs for interference; at the other tackle position is Lester Rowe, who played prep ball in Montana; Sammy Shoulder- Blade, fast charging end is at left end. In the backfield Coach W ilder has “ A rt” Shilo, hard blocking right halfback; “ jitterbug” Lodge,who sweeps those ends is at left halfback; “ Chet” VanPelt, who is calling the signals, was also on last year’s varsity at quarterback. At the fullback position he has hard driving “ Elsie” Queampts, who does most of the ground gaining and punt ing. In addition to these boys who turned out are Brewer, Sams, Sloan, Bear Cloud, Suppah, Mesplie, Seyler, Tatshama, Samuels, Elmer and Eugene Booth, and R. Bolton. A game has been scheduled with the yarsity on Armistice day. Probably a game with Reed College or Pacific College will be arranged later. ,-w * Inter-class Football Playing the first half of the inter-class football jamboree held on Sanders’ Field, the “ M ighty” Seniors romped over the “ Green” Freshmen, opening the touch-football,tothe tune of 33-0. The Freshmen were no match for the Seniors’ aerial attack which they furnished through out the entire half. In the second half of the jamboree the Juniors and the ,Sophomores battled to a scoreless tie. Both teams showed some excellent passing, es pecially by the Sopliojaores, who are coached by Adam Bearcub. There are still ¿bout three or four more games to be played to decide the cham pionship. *' & Girls’ Intram ural Sports The Girls in high school are having th e ir an nual interclass volleyball tournament. The Fresh men elected Margie McCarty as their captain. The Sophomores elected Maiselle McCloud for their captain. T he Juniors and Seniors haven’t elected their team captains as yet, but playing will start next week. The girls are studying the different apparatus in their gym classes, and will receive points for earning th&if letters. The girls get to play in the gym every day of the week. Esther Frank, Georgia Nanamkin and Marjorie Skahan attended the Regional Youth Christian Conference at Corvallis, on Saturday, N qv . 2. Lena Davis, one of the ‘ ‘Amarican’ ’ reporters, and a Junior, left for Tacoma, W ashington, where she will spend a few months recovering her health' The YWCA held their installation services dur ing the Protestant chapel service on Sunday, November 3 * New members were officially in stalled in the strikingly beautiful candle light. Mrs. Mackie directed the service. *
