They were very happy, the little diver was a good wife and the Crane a fine husband. One day the wife pretended that she was ill and the Crane became concerned about her, for he thought that she was really quite ill. He went fishing and tried his best to get her the choicest nourishing food, and after catching a few he would hurry home and give them to his wife. Af ter several days, he began to wonder why his wife did not improve in health, until one day he came home and found out she was carrying on a flirtation with Mr. Kingfisher and he realized that his wife had not been sick at all and had been deceiving him all the time. He could not de cide how to punish her at first, but finally he decided to fly with her to a very tall cedar tree and leave her their to die. Someone saw the little Diver up in the tree and ran to tell her parents; her parents wanted to savq her if possible so they offered a high re ward to the one who would rescue their daugh ter. After all hope was given up a beautiful girl by the name of Woodpecker came to the amaze ment of all. She unfastened the cedar rope that the little duck had been tied with and saved her. The people and parents rejoiced because of the safe return of the little Diver and proceeded to award the Woodpecker and because they were greatful they gave her nearly all they owned and became poor people. Through the waywardness of their daughter these old people had to suffer, and the lesson part of the story is that though a mis-step not only our selves, but those who are dear to us must suffer, as did the little diver and her parents, when the Little Diver became untrue to her hus band the Crane. _________ L ocal N ew s Mr. Homer L. Morrison, superintendent of In dian education in the state of Washington and a former supei intendent of Chemawa, visited here last week. Superintendent and Mrs. Jackson went to Ta coma on business, last week. Mr. and Mrs, Noble Sanderyille annpunce the arrival of a baby daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Sander- ville are former students of Chemawa and now reside in Browning, Montana, where Mr. Sander- ville is a clerk at the Agency. Mrs. Sanderville willbe remembered as Miss Phyllis Applegate. Miss Hazel Chambers, who came from Loup, Arizona, is the new eighth grade teacher. Che mawa hopes that Miss Chambers will enjoy her work here. A bridal shower, given in honor of Miss Ruby Kiesling by Mrs. Leo Walker, Mrs. Alta James, and Viola Schultz, was held at the Walker home Wednesday evening.Thirty guests enjoyed games and Miss Kiesling received many beautiful gifts. She plans to leave next week for her wedding in California. Forty-five sturdy football players and guests were honored with a banquet Thursday evening, held in the Home Fconomics building. The Willamette Valley Vocational Association members, on Wednesday, February 8, will hold a dinner and business meeting here. One can land on page 1 by trying to pass a truck in an early morning fog, but will be in no con dition to read the account. Yep, road hogs are sloppy drivers. «
