4 Ths CHEMAWA AMERICAN VOCATIONS SOUVENIRS, EXHIBITS, PLANNED BY DEPARTMENTS FOR VISITORS All the shops are kept busy, not only w ith th eir daily work orders, but also w ith the preparation for the Chemawa Indian Celebration. T he gala event which is to be on the following dates, May 31 and June 1. PAINT SHOP M entioning particularly th e paint shop, under the supervision of Mr. W arren W ilder, the paint shop boys are m aking a huge Totem pole. T he m ea surem ents are: 31 feet in height, the di am eter at the top being 22 inches, and 24 inches at the bottom. Upon its completion the Totem pole is to be placed at the northeast corner of the“ intersection, across the road from w hat the students call “ K ic k - b a c k ,” located o n ' the main highway about a mile east of the Chemawa school cam pus, LEATHER CRAFT An Indian village, is planned and the set-up will be under the supervision of Mr. G. E. DeCorah, the instructor of leather craft and shoe repairing. T he work done in the leather-craft departm ent has been under the able supervision and intructions of Mr. G. E. DeCorah. Various designs Jrave been put on the leather goods th at have been made. Such as, key cases, b o o k -e n d s, book m arkers, and belts. BARBER SHOP T he senior barbers are aim ing to do a big business du ring the celebration T he barber shop will be open throughout the big event. _______ PRINT SHOP T he printers are w orking over-time to get out special editions of the school paper, invitations, and program s. The biggest undertaking is the assemblage of the pictures and the w rite-ups for the A nnual. The A nnual will be on sale before the celebration. TAILOR SHOP T he tailor shop has been doing much tbward the im provem ent of appearance. They have been m aking suits, full dress suits, alterations, and m aking clothes for the différant individuals both on the cam pus and outsiders. PLUMBING The plum bers, electricians and carpen ters are busy w ith plans, and m aking preparations for accommodating the vis itors and the guests. AUTO SHOP T he auto mechanics have been m aking different kinds, of iron w rought work, which will be on display and on exhibi tion during the celebration. FARM NEW S All the farm ing has been taken care of by Mr. Shawver. Mr. W elsh, the gardener has beautified our campus immensely. A few trees th at were crowding other trees were re moved, and in there places shrubbery and flowers have been planted. KITCHEN Mr. F ournier and the kitchen help are preparing to feed a large attendance. Also the bakery is putting out some delicacies, under the guidance of Mr. George Smith. HOME ECONOMICS T he home economics departm ent will hold open house in Hawley hall Monday m orning from eight until eleven thirty o’clock during th e Celebration. The foods laboratories and dining room located on the first floor will offer displays of cooked foods, table setting, and foods canned at the Chemawa cannery. In addition, there will be a cooking dem onstration during which visitors may have a chance to “ sam ple” the food. An exhibit of beadwork, blockprint, weaving, and art needlework will be shown in the A rts and Crafts room on the second floor. The nursery playroom will be open to visitors and will also contain a display of homemade furniture and toys made from boxes and scrap ¿lumber by the girls in the household furnishings class. ALUMNI PRESIDENT WRITES LETTER TO CHEMAWA CONCERNING POW-POW Inv itatio n s are bein g received to attend the Chemawa Indian Celebration on May 31 and Ju g e 1, 1937. We are advised th a t the 57th A nniversary of th e school was officially cele brated, locally,, on F ebruary 25, 1937, w ith a p pro p riate exercises com m em orating the Ocasion. The general celebration will include varied pro gram s by th e older In d ian s, the A lum ni, and exercises by th e g rad u atin g classo f 1937. Thèse program s will be special and will afford an o pportunity for all to express th eir thoughts on th e past, p resen t and future. Chemawa is proud of the boys and g irls who have made good and we are looking forw ard to a m ost pleasan t àn d happy reunion. L et us go to Chemawa w ith a full appreciation of the benefits th at we have received there and by our actions indicate th a t we are tru ly th an k fu l for these benefits. CHARGES A.
