1 « The CHEMAWA AMERICAN VOCATIONS AUTO SHOP The E C. W. boys are laying a neat layer of sand and gravel behind our shop. This space will be used for parking and washing cars. Our blacksmith shop is being rebuilt and a new forge will be installed. Gable” Christian and Alpheous Big- horn completed welding an engine-head on a Cheverolet- coupe. CARPENTER SHOP Vernon Jackson is putting together a beautiful walnut table for Mr. and Mrs. Turney. Eouis Eevay is working dil igently on a combination bookstand and end table which he hopes to sell f o r Christmas money. ’ ’ Miss" Newell’s Class. It is called good personality., It is very" interesting and the girls help in making good outlines of i t . Previous to this other character building subjects were studied. - The sophomores have been making different things in their cooking classes. They were successful in making noodle soup. Candy and chocolate drop cookies 'were also made. Mrs. James sewing class is making many useful and beautiful things. Among these are: Buffet sets, knitting bags, purses, handkerchiefs, pillow cases, bath and hand towels and other things. The class drew names to make one another Christmas gifts. WANTED MACHINE SHOP Edward Archambeau and Oscar Moses are making tables using Indian designs. Roy Pepion is the chief designer for Indian symbols. He has made designs for paper knife handles and Alex Ship- pentower -cuts them o u t. and puts the finishing touches on them. Bob Green has completed a lamp in the shop, i BARBER SHOP The barbers have been.doing' nothing but cut hair all day long.1 They have classes all morning which enables them to/study the scientific part of barber science. , The boys would like to learn the art of “ finger waving” but so far they have had no one to practice on. JUNIOR COMMERCIAL The juniors started their ten minute speeches early in November and they are now through. Many of the speeches were educational and entertaining. Six of the junior commercial boys are rapid ly improving in their shorthand due to the student help of Martha Bingham. HOME ECONOMICS ; Mrs. Newell’s “ child care class” has been studying how to develop good citi zenship, initiative, dependability, good judgment, a n d personality in growing children. East week a new subject was started in One Christopher Cringle, alias Santa Claus, for deliberate and prem editat ed entry, via chimney into thousands of American homes. A g e ..,about 2,000 years W eight... a good load for eight reindeers. H e ig h t... tall enough to be a short policeman but h e ’s never caught flat- footed, H abits... decided tendency to break out (or in) around December 25th. The reward will ^ t r i p l e d if he leaves each of our old friends a giant, stocking filled w ith happiness, peace and prosperity for 1937, T H E A M E R IC A N 3 v C am pus N e w s | Elzie Farrow and Dan Motanic, both of Pendleton and graduates of Chemawa, were herC for the senior carnival, The boys and girls are writing many letters in hopes that they may get a letter stating that they may go home for Christmas vacation. Miss Eivina Donnelly was surprised by a visit from /her mother, Mrs. Donnelly, from Alaska. She visited fora few days here and has returned home. For the last two or three Sundays we have been_.having basketball games be tween different classes in the gymnasium. There seems to be quite a rivalry between the Varsity and All-Star teams. Both are very good.. Mr. Mason and his niece, Miss Ruby Kessling, returned from Tacoma, where they spent a very enjoyable week-end visiting relatives and friends. Supt. Jackson, Mrs. Jackson and Mr. Showalter returned the latter part of last week from Texas. They had a very nice trip visiting the different Indian schools and reservations throughout the South west. They also visited Sherman Insti tute before returning home. The boys in'McNary hall 'are all get ting ready to greet dear old Santa Claus. Many wreaths of holly are being placed in the rooms, and many other decorations are going up; Everyone is trying his, best to get the best decorated room. A prize is to be given on Christmas day. The grade school building, the com-> mercial room and the junior high school rooms have Christmas trees that are deco rated with red flowers and red and green — streamers. Myron Anderson, a former-student of Chemawa, has been a visitor of Chemawa for the past few day&v He has just re turned from the navy and is on his way home to visit his parents. The Serenaders went to Salem last Monday to give their program at High land School. A photographer was there and took pictures of them which might go into the Statesman.
