T he CH EMAW A AMERICAN P age 4 SENIOR NOTES CHEMAWA TAKES OPENER Chemawa won its first basketball game, a wild and wooley tussle w7ith Jefferson, at Jefferson on Dec. 23, by the score of 16 to 9. Several factors were respon sible for the ragged, some times wild, passing and inac curate shooting of our boys. Among them were a narrow little gym of the box-car variety, rough op position and just plain old early-season awkwardness. Once in a w’hile the boys showed flashes of what may be expected of them in later games. In the first half things were rather even, the Jeffer son team capitalizing on their familiarity with the home gym, and the half ended 9 to 6. In the second half Chemawa held Jefferson almost scoreless, failing, how ever, to do much scoring themselves. S. Shoulderblade and La Breche were tied for high-scoring with 4 points each. Captain Ike Shoulderblade was the back-bone of our defence and a big factor in our offense, inter cepting numerous passes and figuring prominantly in every advance on the enemy basket. As a whole the 1933-34 outfit shows plenty of promise. These who played in the game were: Forwards, S. Shoulderblade, La Breche, Spotted-Eagle and Zundle; guards, I. Shoulderblade, Keyote; center, Ma- jhor. The B squad played the preliminary against the mid get Jefferson B team. The little follows knew their way around the Jefferson gym, though, and did some nice work. Our boys, however, stumbled over their opponents to a comfortable victory of 36 to 8. All our players were playing their first game except Vander- berg. Youpe led our scorers with 14 points. ♦ ♦ ♦ The girls’ basketball team played their first game at Jefferson last Wednesday. The game proved to be an exciting and thrilling event. The Chemawa girls were slow to get started and at the end of the first half Jefferson led with a score of 9 to 5. At the be- gining ot the second half Chemawa accustomed them selves to the court and their passes began to click. At the end of the third quarter they led with a score of 13 to 9. Jefferson tied the score during the last quarter but Edith Masten made a free throw, putting Chemawa in the lead, 14 to 13, just as the game ended. The girls are busy practicing for the return game with Jefferson to be played on December 22. Quite a num ber of Chemawa’s loyal basketball fans motor to Jef ferson to root for their teams. * * * • Mr. Fred Rickard is going to sponsor the Chemawa boxing club and he thinks that it will be possible for him to secure many outside matches. This will give many husky lads the action that they need and crave. To the editors of the A merican , the faculty and the students, the senior class extends the season’s greetings. So far, statistics reveal that a considerable number of seniors are going home for the holidays. We are sure that they will enjoy themselves to the utmost. Plans are under way for the senior commercial class’ speed contest. Nellie Boe and Laverne Ulmer were chosen captains and drew names for their respective groups. During the past weeks the academic and vocational seniors have all made a pilgrimage to the Kennel-Ellis studios in Salem to be photographed. The proofs have been seen, are satisfactory and orders have been placed. They now await the pictures. At the present time plans are being carefully laid for the one and only Senior Ball which is to be given in the Chemawa gymnasium on January 20. Tickets will be on sale early in January. This is an event for the support of our deah ol’ Alma mater’s annual. Series of food sales are being held in the dormitories after chapel Sunday evenings. The purpose of the sales is to allow no one to go to bed feeling the pangs of hunger as well as to raise cash for the annual. We guarantee to be reasonable and wTe do serve good food. The senior commercial students seemed determined to increase their vocabularies. They are taking turns in bringing useful, unfamilar words to the classroom. Everyday someone brings a new word, teaches the meaning of the word, how to pronounce it correctly, how to spell it and write it in both long hand and short hand. Irene Thomas and Leonard Vivette are the appoint ed captains of the senior teams that will participate in the athletic tournaments to be held during the holidays. We are betting heavily on you senior con testants and feel certain that our confidence shall not be in vain. A little loyal support from the honorable seniors and our invincible contestants will raise our colors. CHRISTMAS FLUSTBATIONS And this is Christmas, if you please, With “Peace on Earth, Good Will to Man’’— To me it brought ten thousand fits, This very Holy Christmas plan. I thought of this and thought of that, Considered well my stock of pelf; I am a wreck with nerves unstrung— A man I am but not myself. At last the holy day has dawned, And all is peace both far and near; Good friends again are in my thoughts— I hope for you real Christmas cheer. Material things are so much dross, As presents they, at best, are nil, So for you, Friend, my present is, A stocking full of right Good Will. —T.
