T he CHEMAWA AMERICAN ORG ANIZATIONS On Saturday afternoon the members of the Latoon campfire group enjoyed a hike and picnic. Monday evening the Pootan campfire girls went for a hike. They returned to Miss Black’s where a sur prise awaited them. At the meeting of the Y. M. C. A. held January 22, interesting talks on vocational work were given by several of the members. The music club girls have recently received word from two former members, Verna Starr and Evange lin Gillette, who are now in Phoenix, Arizona. Jan. 25, the Exelsior and Nonpareil clubs held a joint session with “Lefty” Wilder presiding. All members were there and everyone had an enjoyable time. The Grade School Girl Reserves elected officersagain and the following were chosen: President, Lena May Bill; secretary, June Edmo; reporter, Pearl Beaumont. The Y. W. C. A. committees have new members working and expect to do things. At a recent meeting Misses Boyd, Hillman, Hawley, Woodcock and Hay ashi told why they chose their vocations. The Lone Pine troop has been taking tenderfoot tests. They will probably be finished with their test on Mon day. The troop has been divided into two patrols which plan the programs to be given on each meeting night. Troop No. 2 has been studying the Morse code for signalling and they think it is lots of fun. Troop No. 1, Girl Scouts, did not meet during their regular time as Mrs. Middleton was busy filling out papers to send to the headquarters for the first class registration cards. Those who passed their tenderfoot test at our last meeting were Florence Wells, Pearl Boyd and Mildred Smith. We are now working on a note book which will give the history of each scout in our troop. The Little Flower society held a meeting on Tues day evening Jan. 24. It was decided to have a joint meeting with the Catholic Boys association on Tues day Jan. 31. Plans for a joint Valentine’s party were discussed. It was suggested that we get our dues in not later than Feb. 10. Those who do not pay their dues cannot go to the party. After the business meet ing there was a program. Miss Roddy and Mrs. Allen continued their instructions. On Tuesday evening January 26, the junior and senior vocational girls from the hospital, Miss Fout and Miss Schaeffer, gave a farewell surprise party for Dr. H. N. Sisco. An enjoyable evening was spent in playing games after which delicious refreshments were served. Esther Hillman, our president, presented a billfold to Dr. Sisco in behalf of the vocational girls P age 3 and hospital staff. The billfold was made here in Chemawa and had the doctor’s enitials embossed on it. FROM THE CLASS-BOOMS On Jan. 23, the junior class held a meeting and made plans for the coming song and yell contest. The junior prom was also discussed. On Friday afternoon the 8-G-2 had their class meet ing in their home room. They had a number of spe cial musical selections, readings and stories. The program was an enjoyable event. The 7-G-2 class had a program on the class-meeting day. The numbers on the program included talks, songs and stories by the class members. We are sorry to lose Clare George as she has been promoted. The 7-G-l had their meeting last Friday and decided to have a Valentine program. They will invite two members of the other seventh grade groups. In our gym class squad one won the final game of the class. The eighth grade have put away their history books and are now on civics. They are still working on their plan books. They have started a new system, the big brother movement. The 8 B-2 boys are ahead with George Magee and his little brother leading. The ninth grade have been studying debating. The boys have been trying to decide which is a better game, football or baseball. The girls are trying to decide whether or not a poor boy or girl is more like ly to succeed than a rich boy or girl. Our main trouble is that the students all want to take the same side. FBOM THE DORMITORIES The Mitchell hall basketball team played a game with an eighth grade team from Oregon city and were victorious to the degree of 40 to 30. Wilson Bobb our midget forward and “Banjo” Ray starred. There have been only two rooms that haven't received A- plus since Christmas. The demerit system has gone into effect and the halls of Winona resemble glass. The McBride hall girls seem pretty willing to keep our building cleaned up for us as they still insist on coming over without passes. During the week three of our girls have re turned home, they are Dorothy Matt, Mayme Henry, and Pearl Lowery. SENIORS The seniors were more successful in the class games this time, with the boys and girls both scoring over the sophomores. Hurrah! for us. We really intend to keep up the good work. Miss White now has the characters picked out for the senior play, which we feel is going to be a huge suc cess this year. The play is quite different from past senior plays given here, and we know that everyone will enjoy it, as they will be on their tip-toes every minute wondering what will happen next. Mr. Rainey let us all down this quarter and rather surprised us with our grades. Perhaps we deserved it, but everyone has been making new resolutions since. Good for us!
