Newspaper Page TextP age 4 T he CHEMAWA AMERICAN The new athletic field is nearing completion. We wonder if we can play on it this fall. An appropriate name for it would be “Ryan Field.” CHEMAWA, OREGON NORMAL BATTLE TO A TIE The result of Oregon Normal-Chemawa game was not apparent at the outset. It appeared that the Braves had the best of the argument as the score read 12-0 at the end of the first quarter. However, a few fumbles put the teachers in a good position to score and they finally made it 12-6 at the half. Chemawa scored again in the third period but the teachers would not be stopped and due to their heavier line and greater experience managed to put over one touchdown after an intercepted pass was caught and run back to the eight yard line and then made another touchdown on their famous tackle sneak play which had twice failed previously. The final score was 18-18 and we may well be proud of our boys in putting up such a good game against the heavy odds (and ends) that were put against them. CHEMAWA ALL-STARS DROP ONE The All-stars with partial help from the high school team was able to hold the Oregon State College rooks for the first quarter only. After that our line was badly outcharged and the backs failed to consistently stop the onslaught of the then momentum gaining rooks. Had our players kept the pace they started in the first quarter the story might well be a different one as the other team was not 31 points better. Chemawa plays Eugene Freshmen, a team reportedly much weaker than the rooks. A splendid chance to show our comeback qualities. This game will be at Eugene, Friday night. CHEMAWA ALL STARS VS. LINFIELD The all-stars showed class by outcharging and out playing the Linfield Reserves 12-0 on Oct. 8. The high school players filled in on several occasions. The game was filled with long gains and passes most of which were made by the Reserves but only in the center of the field. When Chemawa had to hold, they did. The all-stars have but to continue the good work to have a fine aggregation. OREGON CITY HERE On Saturday, Oct. 15, our high school team will play Oregon City high school on our own grounds. This will be our biggest game here for the season. Sophomores were going big guns in the intra-mural schedule until they struck a snag in the seniors last Sunday. The score after a strenuous struggle, many long runs, and passes ended 7-6 for the seniors. Byron J. Brophy has installed a commercial course at Flandreau. The course includes two years of work and trains students in bookkeeping, shorthand, typewriting, business English and office management. It is a popular course being filled to capacity and having a large waiting list. * * * The three lower grades were eliminated at the Genoa (Neb.) school this year, we learn from the Indian News. The grades run from fourth to twelfth inclusive. Enrollment in the upper grades has naturally increased. Great care was taken and con siderable time spent this fall in placing the students, both in the academic and vocational departments. * * * Wrangell Institute, a U. S. Indian School in Wrangell Alas ka, opened its doors on October 2 with Mr. Leroy Jackson as director. Grades from the sixth through the twelfth are taught and strict academic, physical and moral conduct requirements are maintained. The capacity of the school is limited to 80 students at present. Pupils are enabled to work their way through school throught a plan similar to the one in use here at Chemawa. * ♦ ♦ The Sherman Institute band did itself proud at the Los An geles County Fair, being acclaimed by the throngs who at tended the fair and praised by the Fair officials. The band and its director, D. Ray Campbell, was the subject of a good article in the Riverside Press. The members responded will ingly to many requests to perform and made such a fine impres sion that they were selected from among many bands to lead the famous “Million Dollar” stock parade. ♦ * ♦ Several new pieces of equipment have been added to Haskell Institute’s commercial department. Seven new adding ma chines, a bookkeeping machine and a calculator are the latest additions. Some revision will be made in the course of study to meet the changes in the industrial and commercial world. Haskell has had unusual success in placing her commercial graduates and this is partly due to the fact that she has kept up with the world in equipment and teaching methods.
