I t was fully up to form er q u ality . T he co n testan ts of th e 3rd, 4 th , 5th and 6th g rad es did them selves pro u d , and it was a difficult m atter for the ju d g es to m ake a decision, but finally agreed upon first place to be given to A nna B rendible of th e 6th grade, Miss Davis, teacher; N orm an Boyd, second of th e 5th grade, Miss G u n n , teacher; Leonard McCoy, fo u rth grade, third place, Miss Lam b teacher. O rch estra A T H L E T IC N O TES S p rin g athletics broke into full bloom here last S atu rd ay afternoon w hen our v arsity baseball team trim m ed th e S tayton high school 16 to 1 and th e Mc Bride H all girls tro u n ced th e W in o n a H all team 23 to 10. T h ere was sim ply n o th in g to it for th e vic torious team s who waltzed aro u n d th e bags alm ost at will. Pliinney and Charles G eorge, p itch in g for the v a r sity , held th e S tayton b atters at th e ir m ercy and al lowed only one hit d u rin g th e e n tire fracas, w hile “ L efty J o e ” ascended the m ound and tu rn ed the w ould-be h itters back to the bench in one, tw o, and th ree order. O u r batters found little difficulty if any in h ittin g th e S tayton p itchers, for they w ere touched for sev eral two and th ree base hits and one hom e ru n . A tk in s, catcher; M inthorne, first; N orw est, second; D andro G eorge, shortstop; and B uchert, th ird , played like veterans around the bases and hit like “ Babe R u th ” at th e bat, to say n o th in g about the speed w ith w hich they ran and slid th e bases, w hile DePoe, A b ra ham and B rendible took care of th e outfield positions to perfection. S atu rad ay afternoon our track and baseball team s will en ter into a dual track m eet and ball gam e here against the Salem high school. T he ball gam e is scheduled to be called at o n e-th irty to allow plenty of tim e for th e track m eet. L ast year ou r varsity dropped one gam e to the high school and we are w orking hard to stage a stro n g com e-back in th e gam e S atu rd ay , w hile the track team prom ises to give a good account of itself in spite of th e absence of any experienced track m en. M cM aster, S hepard, D onnelly, T u rn to e s, P etellin , Beauvais, F ro st, P eratrovich, K eiser and M ichell are a few of those w ho have been tu rn in g out lately for track w ork and are likely to be seen in C hem aw a track su its S atu rd ay . B A T T A L IO N N O TES S tran ge, b u t tru e, the g irls ’ lines are as stra ig h t as a pin as they pass th e review ing stan d . S u p erin ten d en t H all was on hand S unday evening as review ing officer of the dress p arade to review his troops. A n effort is being m ade to get m ore g u n s for th e boys. W e sure need ’em —there is n ’t en o u g h to go aro u n d . O ne tim e o u r parade g ro u n d was p len ty large enough to stage a parade w ith o u t cram p in g our com panies, but it looks like “ them days are gone fo re v e r.” T h e com panies of the b oys’ battalion have been d rillin g each m orning before breakfast and the girls after supper, g ettin g ready for th e drills on m ilitary day d u rin g com m encem ent. E ach W ednesday m orn in g th e com panies of th e b o y s’ b attalion assem ble on th e parade g ro u n d s for se ttin g -u p exercises, rifle drill, b attalion drill and parade, all before breakfast. L ast year com pany “ A ” of th e boys’ battalio n , under th e com m and of A lbert Spearson, won th e cup, w hile com pany “ D ” u n d e r the com m and of Sadie N apoleon, won for th e g irls ’ b attalio n . T h e band has m ade several additions lately, and probably the tallest in person of W allace M organ, who is the new ly elected d ru m -m ajo r. W allace’s h eig h t helps to m ake him an ideal d ru m -m ajo r.
