Loos is th e proprietress of a very p opular hotel, know n as the C arlbeck, w hile M r. Loos is em ployed by the C ity Schools as d irecto r of m usic. H e has a band of six ty boys. E ach m em ber answ ered to th eir nam e w ith an original verse w hich b ro u g h t fo rth m any “ Gem th o u g h ts .’’ R eports of officers and com m ittees were received and M rs. H all gave us a very helpful talk and m ade m any su g g estio n s as to ways in w hich we can be useful and m ake o u r influence felt for good. W e closed w ith a song “ fe s t.” S u p t. H all gave a splendid talk in chapel last S u n d ay evening. H is them e was based on th e necessity of h u m an ity for “ H a p p in e ss,” and he clearly and ably set forth m any undeniable tru th s d u rin g his talk . G IRLS LOSE H ARD -FO UG H T GAME TO STAYTON O ur girls lost to th e undefeated S tay to n high school team at S tayton last S atu rd ay evening in one of the m ost e x c itin g gam es we have had th is season. T h e good record of o u r girls preceded them to S tay to n and it seemed th a t th e w hole tow n, in c lu d in g fa th e rs, m otheis, bro th ers and sisters, tu rn e d o u t to see them in action an d the S tay to n ites got the scare of th eir lives, for o u r tossers k ept the crow d, as well as th e team , ju m p in g sidew ays from sta rt to finish and from one end of th e cig ar box to the o th er. O nly in th e first q u a rte r did th e S tay to n team appear to have th e slig h test edge on our hoopers an d th a t o n ly in h ittin g the b ask et, as th e score ended 9 to 5 in th e ir favor. In the second period a sw itch was m ade to stren g th en the defense. Cora Black replaced Cecilia S m ith at g u a rd and M aude H aey took B lack ’s place at PA G E 3 ru n n in g cen ter. T he change equalized the fighting sp irit up and dow n th e co u rt, and we m ig h t say held the S tay to n team scoreless, for th e close checking on the p art of our gu ard s allow ed b u t few throw s to th e basket and S tayton succeeded only in a n n e x in g points from the free throw line. In th e second half our basketeers started th eir m arch to th e to p of th e ladder and set th e crowd w ild w ith en th u siasm w hich m ade it im possible to h ear th e offi c ia l’s w histle. W ith ju st three m inutes to play and the score 11 to 9 in S ta y to n ’s favor one of ou r fighting and ever d eterm ined forw ards threw the basket th a t tied th e score 11 to 11. T h en one dozen girls started fighting h ard er th a n ever and m uch as if th e outcom e of the gam e m eant life or d e a th , for S tayton had w eathered th e storm of eighteen stra ig h t gam es w ith out a loss and C hem aw a, w ith th e pride of th eir school back of them , were m ak in g a w onderful effort to b rin g hom e th a t big slab of bacon. T h en o u t from th e th ick est of th e battle cam e the shrill rep o rt of th e tim e r’s w histle and our dream s were sent to sm ith ereens for S tayton converted a foul ju s t before th e tim e r’s g u n ended th e gam e, 12 to 11 in th eir favor. It was not exactly a jovial team th a t journeyed hom e after th e gam e, b u t th e ir sorrow s were soon drow ned in th e com fortable hom e of S u p erin ten d e n t and M rs. H all and one of th e m ost delightful lunches ever p re pared for a basketball team . T h en after a late h o u r the girls w ent happily to th e ir q u arte rs w ith th e th o u g h t th a t it often takes a better team to lose than it does to w in. Y. M. A N D Y. W. 0 . A. NOTES L ast S unday m orning at S u n d ay school, four teacher tra in in g diplom as were aw arded. T h e stu d e n ts re ceiving these were, Cecile S m ith , C arrie A nderson, Jesse M organ, and E li K arabelnikoff. T h ey have done exceptionally fine w ork, having com pleted the te x t “ P rep aratio n for T e a c h in g ” by O liver, and in addition to this having done m ost acceptable w ork teach in g S unday school classes. S upt. H all very kindly consented to present the diplom as and com plim ented the class, on th eir splendid w ork, saying th a t they w ere developing a religious leadership w hich was valuable now at Chem aw a and would prove in creasingly so in later years. T h e Y . M. C. A . has had some u n u su ally good d is cussion m eetings of late on topics p e rtin e n t to cam pus life. E specially good w as Dan O rto n ’s discussion of the q u e s tio n ,“ W h at is th e best th in g in ou r school life?” his conclusion beiug th a t “ o p p o rtu n ity ” is th e best th in g th a t comes to our stu d e n ts in th e ir school life. S u n d ay afternoon th e P ro te sta n t stu d e n ts listened to a splendid and very helpful address by D r. W . C. K an tn e r of the F irs t C ongregational C h u rch in Salem . H e spoke from the te x t, “ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in baskets of silver.
