G IRLS LOSE H ARD -FO UG H T GAME TO STAYTON
O ur girls lost to th e undefeated S tay to n high school
team at S tayton last S atu rd ay evening in one of the m ost
e x c itin g gam es we have had th is season. T h e good
record of o u r girls preceded them to S tay to n and it
seemed th a t th e w hole tow n, in c lu d in g fa th e rs, m otheis,
bro th ers and sisters, tu rn e d o u t to see them in action
an d the S tay to n ites got the scare of th eir lives, for o u r
tossers k ept the crow d, as well as th e team , ju m p in g
sidew ays from sta rt to finish and from one end of th e
cig ar box to the o th er.
O nly in th e first q u a rte r did th e S tay to n team appear
to have th e slig h test edge on our hoopers an d th a t o n
ly in h ittin g the b ask et, as th e score ended 9 to 5 in
th e ir favor. In the second period a sw itch was m ade
to stren g th en the defense. Cora Black replaced Cecilia
S m ith at g u a rd and M aude H aey took B lack ’s place at
PA G E 3
ru n n in g cen ter. T he change equalized the fighting
sp irit up and dow n th e co u rt, and we m ig h t say held
the S tay to n team scoreless, for th e close checking on
the p art of our gu ard s allow ed b u t few throw s to th e
basket and S tayton succeeded only in a n n e x in g points
from the free throw line.
In th e second half our basketeers started th eir m arch
to th e to p of th e ladder and set th e crowd w ild w ith
en th u siasm w hich m ade it im possible to h ear th e offi
c ia l’s w histle. W ith ju st three m inutes to play and
the score 11 to 9 in S ta y to n ’s favor one of ou r fighting
and ever d eterm ined forw ards threw the basket th a t
tied th e score 11 to 11. T h en one dozen girls started
fighting h ard er th a n ever and m uch as if th e outcom e
of the gam e m eant life or d e a th , for S tayton had
w eathered th e storm of eighteen stra ig h t gam es w ith
out a loss and C hem aw a, w ith th e pride of th eir
school back of them , were m ak in g a w onderful
effort to b rin g hom e th a t big slab of bacon.
T h en o u t from th e th ick est of th e battle cam e the
shrill rep o rt of th e tim e r’s w histle and our dream s were
sent to sm ith ereens for S tayton converted a foul ju s t
before th e tim e r’s g u n ended th e gam e, 12 to 11 in
th eir favor.
It was not exactly a jovial team th a t journeyed hom e
after th e gam e, b u t th e ir sorrow s were soon drow ned
in th e com fortable hom e of S u p erin ten d e n t and M rs.
H all and one of th e m ost delightful lunches ever p re
pared for a basketball team . T h en after a late h o u r
the girls w ent happily to th e ir q u arte rs w ith th e
th o u g h t th a t it often takes a better team to lose than
it does to w in.
