T h in k th is over an d by stu d y and usage m ake y o u r life here and in later years th e b etter for it. T h e three qualities so necessary to success, are: 1st. Intelligence (o r v isio n ). 2nd. Self-control. 3rd. Courage. It may also be added that we, as a people, are d iv id ed into two great classes: T hose who see th in g s, and those who d o n ’t. A person who has the intelligence to see th in g s, or ra th e r to reason o u t a fu tu re for him self, is o n e-th ird on the road to success. A n o th er one-third is th e self-control necessary to do, little by’lit- tle, th in g s w hich are im perative, no m atter how hard or unpleasant the details of doing them may be. T h e last on e-th ird , to m ake u p th e w hole, is the courage and stability to stick to th e th in g on han d in sp ite of difficulties and tem p tatio n s th a t m ay appear. T hese three q u alities in a m an or w om an will in su re success, absolutely. ___ ITEMS FROM THE TRADES T en sets of h arn ess for the In d ia n Service were com pleted recently end have been sent to the various schools and agencies for w hich they were o rd ered . T h e resignation of our chief engineer has placed the responsibility upon M r. G ouley and his assistan ts. T h ey tell us th a t we m ay exp ect “ business as u su al, or b e tte r.’’ T h e p ain ters are busy in several places and th eir efforts are ap p aren t to th e least observing—especially w hen some one finds out he has failed to see th e sign “ w et p a in t.” A lig h t in the auditorium each evening im m ediately after su pper indicates the presence of th e E xcelsiors schem ing som ething good to give us in their open session F eb ru ary 9. T h e pupils of the second grade are proudly boasting th a t th e close of this period b ro u g h t no failures in th e ir class, and challenge any other class in the school to show a 100 per cent record of passing grades. Miss G oodm an arrived at C hem aw a on Ja n . 31 and assum ed d u ty as teacher of th e fo u rth grade F eb. 1. She relieved Miss W eaver, of Salem , who has been doing excellent w ork w ith th e boys and girls of this grad e. Miss G oodm an com es from th e Sac and F ox agency in Iow a. T h e th ird grade is m aking splendid progress in p en m anship under Miss S ta n le y ’s direction. Sam ples of th e ir w ritin g com pare very favorably, in fact, are q u ite as good in every respect as th e penm anship of this g rad e in o th er schools w here special teachers of w rit in g are em ployed. Miss S o u th w o rth is fo rw ard in g to th e school in P o rtlan d th e first assignm ent of th e te ach e rs’ w ork in p en m an ship. M arked im provem ent is show n in the p en m an ship of each teacher who is ta k in g th e course; th e teachers speak highly of th e ability of Miss South- w orth as an in stru c to r in w ritin g . GENERAL ITEMS M rs. Brickell spent the w eek-end visiting relatives in P o rtlan d . T h e p ainters have reached th e lau n d rv and are now d ecorating it inside. Of late th e plum bers have been occupied w ith pipe rep airin g under M cBride H all. T h e pie-carrier, m entioned recently by T h e A m eri can as being in a sta te of evolution, is now in operation and it is a com plete success. T h e carp en ters are doing considerable rep airin g in various buildings and will co n tin u e to do so as long as th e ir scant store of m aterials last. W e are ex p ectin g m ore lum ber in th e fu tu re. W ork of w idening our 100-yd. track is in progress. T h is will m ake it better for all sp rin t events, both interclass and w ith visiting team s. T h e m achinists and blacksm iths have u n ited to pro duce a connection for th e oil cars. T h ro u g h an error on the part of some one th e connection we had was lost, m aking necessary the m an u factu re of a new p art. T h e gardeners have th e orchards pruned and the b rush is all burned. T h ey are now w orking in the root house, so rtin g out seed, etc., for sp rin g w ork. T h e tailors have been busy for some tim e cleaning, pressing and rep airin g uniform s. S u n d ay m orning inspection show s th at they are progressing w ith the w ork. A word to the boys in th is connection: You cannot expect to have a good looking uniform if you do not take care of it. C hew ing gum and o th er foreign m a tte r can n o t be removed readily by any tailor an d if you w ant to have a nice looking uniform you will have to give it care. ACADEMIC NOTES T h e th ird and fifth grades are at w ork on th eir p ro gram for F eb. 22. K n o w in g the qu ality of work alw ays produced oy these g rad es, we are ex p ectin g a real trea t. T h e stu d en t girl cooks at th e E m p lo y es’ C lub change details this week, and to th eir credit it is said th a t they were so good in their line th a t th e patrons at the Club are sorry to see them changed. On account of th e tu n n el to the pow er house cross in g o u r race track, it has been necessary to reduce the d istan ce from a quarter-m ile to a fifth-m ile. Five tim es around for a mile instead of foui as was form erly necessary. T h e carp en ters du g up th e rem ains of an anim al or bird of some sort under th eir shop recently. T hey have not yet classified it, but it m arks the beginning of th eir private m useum Mr. Mason and his boys are alw ays d ig g in g up so m ething— a real live bunch, we declare.
