H e was accom panied by his b ro th er, Jam es D em tnert, of th e sam e place. M rs. D em m ert, m other of th e girls, is a C hem aw a ex s tu d en t. T h e ladylike dem eanor and high stan d in g of th e D em m ert sisters at C hem aw a reflects m uch credit u p o n th eir p arents. O ld dog “ J a c k ” has been obeessed for some tim e th a t it w as up to him to in tercep t all train s passing by our school. A few days ago he tried to do business w ith a passenger train as it roared by at a 40-tnile-ati- h o u r pace. W ell, Jack connected and disconnected, and shortly thereafter he was the recip ien t of “ first a id ” at the h ands of our Bov S couts. Jack is b etter, b u t th e Scouts are still carin g for him . In addition to a good song service d u rin g Chapel exercises last S unday evening th e o rchestra played an “ In d ia n In term ezzo ” by B row n, Lucy V erney san g “ In th e Secret of H is P resen ce” by L ow ry, G eorge P h in n ey recited “ S allust to t h e Rom an S e n a to rs,” a PA G E 3 ch o ru s of girls sang by request “ D rink to Me O nly W ith T h in e E y e s ,” th e choir sang “ W e Bless T hee for T h y P eace” by Briggs, and S u p t. H all closed the exercises w ith a splendid talk to the stu d e n ts, in w hich he recited m any tru th s th a t they should rem em ber. In fact, w ithout an in tim ate acq u ain tan ce w ith the facts th a t he placed before them our y o u n g people c a n n o t hope to g et far in life. It was a w orth-w hile talk. Mrs. H all is in receipt of a letter from Fred C ardin th a n k in g th e kind friends at C hem aw a for the b ea u ti ful C hristm as rem em brances sent him self, W illie Reddie and other m em bers of the com pany. T h e y w ere d e lig h ted w ith th e exquisite w ork done by the girls in th e art needlew ork dep artm en t and said th a t they w ould show these gifts w ith m uch pride and pleasure as th e handiw ork of C hem aw a g irls. T h ey w ere es pecially pleased th a t the handkerchiefs were m ade for them personally. Since giving th eir m em orable con cert at Chem aw a last December they have given con certs in T ex as and the m iddle states. F red says th at he and W illie are signed up as m em bers of th e De p artm en t of M usic of the U niversity of N ebraska, at L incoln, N ebr. T h ey en ter upon th eir w ork at this in stitu tio n on th e first of n ext Septem ber. T h is is certainly a m atter of pride to all of us, as it proves the q u ality and class of Chem aw a p roducts. W e cannot com m end these young a rtists too highly. G IRLS LOSE TO W O O D BURN On last S atu rd ay evening our g irls ’ basketball team , accom panied by S u p erin ten d en t and M rs. H all and several other backers and basketball en th u siasts, braved the snow storm and drove to W oodburn w here our girls m et and were defeated by the hig h school girls 24 to 18. W h eth er ou r girls were cold or not from the drive we do not know , but at any rate it took them till th e second half to locate the basket, th o u g h th eir passing w as su p erio r to th at of W o o d b u rn ’s. K lam p, a left-handed forw ard for W oodburn, was a slicker when it came to shooting baskets and very seldom missed. She made all of W o o d b u rn ’s 24 points, th o u g h it was by no m eans a one-m an team , for the o th e r five were fast and good passers. In the second half our team got into the gam e with th e w histle and did not stan d around and wait for W oodburn to lead, and all but overcam e the big lead th a t the h ig h school girls rolled up in the first half. G irls, rem em ber, th a t gam es are won in th e first half as well as in th e second and to win you m ust play hard all th ro u g h the gam e. T h o u g h th e team did not w in it was a m ost enjoyable trip and ended up most happily, for on th eir re tu rn hom e M r. an d Mrs. H all took the p a rty unto th eir hom e and served a m ost delicious lunch.
