W o rk in g , of Salem , has entered on d u ty as as sistan t m atro n in W inona H all. O ur office force has been busy of late g e ttin g out w ork for the Colville In d ian A gency. O ne-piece uniform s are now being m ade in th e sew ing rooms for the M cBride H all g irls. B lanche C onner, of P endelton, visited C hem aw a for a few davs and atten d ed the W inona program . Mrs. M arina (N e lso n ) P otts is now living w ith her h u sband and tw o sm all sons in P arto la, C alifornia. Mrs V a n d a g rift, m anager of our T ea ch ers’ Club, has been in P o rtlan d recently en jo y in g her an n u il vacation. R eports have reached us to the effect th a t E lizabeth Cogo, a form er stu d e n t at our school, is now w orking in S eattle. Mr«. Ju lia (M ills) M iller is now m an ag in g h er own hom e in P ortland and all speak highly of her hou se keeping abilities. Some very nice fu rn itu re has been tu rn ed out in the ca rp e n try d ep artm en t for th e hospital office, w ards, and the reception hall. D orothy H o lst is said to be ta k in g special nurse tra in in g at her hom e in Ju n e au , A laska. She left C hem aw a last sum m er. O ne of o u r senior girls, Sadie R idley, and F ran cis H a n b u ry , a fresh m an , have re tu rn e d to th e ir hom es in A laska—th ey left last w e e k . T h e second division of the seventh grade girls are now in the dom estic science d ep artm en t and Mrs. B rickell speaks h ig h ly of th eir w ork. I t is rep o rted to us th a t th e girls of W inona H all are m uch pleased w ith th eir new m atrons, Mrs. C arrow , wife of P aul C arrow , and Mrs. K now les. G iace M origeau and H azel Boyd are assisting the n»w in itro n s in W in o n a H all d u rin g th e changes now in progress. Both of these girls have had experience and know ab o u t the w ork. Several of the Chem aw a em ployees attended the recent perform ances of the L ig h t O pera C om pany in Salem. T h e m atinee on S atu rd ay afternoon drew a large crow d for “ P in a fo re .” L ucile L aC ounte and M arie E aglem an were resp o n sible for th e costu m in g of the Bobby Shafto num ber at the W inona O pen Session. T h e girls who appear on the platform do not do all the w ork. I t is a long jo u rn ey from C hem aw a to P h o en ix , A rizona, but in an office in th e latter city will be found V elth a F razier, a g rad u ate of our class of 19. From w hat we are told she is d o in g well. E m m a C arlson is em ployed in San F rancisco, C ali fornia. S he was a popular C hem aw a stu d e n t while at C hem aw a. Dame R um or h in ts at a w edding in w hich she will figure as one of the co n tractin g parties. W e are told th a t we mav expect to hear of the m a r riage of A nna M iller some tim e d u rin g th e com ing m onth. She is now em ployed in P o rtlan d . All Che- m -w a will w ish h»-r happiness w hen she m arries we do now. Lena Cleveland, a form er stu d en t, is now in A rcata, California; her sister Jessie is at the W averly Baby Hom e, P o rtland, and K atie, another of the Cleveland sisters, is em ployed in San Francisco. No m atter w here they are we expect good reports from these girls. Louise S ilverthorne and Ju lia Grom off, two form er Chem awa girls, are now em ployed at the W averly Baby H om e in P ortland w here thev are g ettin g along nicely. T hey are also a tten d in g th e B enke-W alker College four n ig h ts a week and are reported to be d o ing splendid w ork. How thev travel! But they never forget Chem aw a. W e have learned th at Miss C atherine Reed, former assistant nurse at Chem aw a as well as one of our g ra d uates, is now holding a position in th e co u n ty hospital, Mission Road, Los A ngeles, C alifornia. R eport has it th at she is g ettin g along fam ously. T h e E n terp rise society, th e com ing leaders of girls at Chem aw a, cam e to the fro n t last F rid ay evening in their songs and yells. T hey are show ing good m a te r ial. T h e older societies, as alw ays, did splendidly, but we are proud of this bu d d in g so c iety . T h e N e sik a , a younger boys’ societv, made a w orthy effort w hich will no doubt m aterialize th e next tim e. D uring chapel exercises last S unday evening the orchestra played 4 Land o ’ D ream s by S chum ann, a septet of girls sang “ D rink to Me O nly W ith T h in e E y es” — an old E n g lish so n g —A ddie M errill gave as a m onologue “ M innie at the M ovies,” th e choir sang “ E x to l Ye the L o rd ” by S haw ker, and S u p t. H all closed w ith a very stro n g talk on “ R eputation and C h a ra c te r.” H e m ade clear th e value of possessing a good rep u tation and agood character and also m en tio n ed how poverty-stricken is the person w ith a bad nam e. It was a talk w orthy the serious consideration of all and it was convincingly given. SE N IO R NOTES W e were q u ite surp rised to see tw o seniors, A nna L aR ance, and C arrie A nderson, take part in th e W inona Open Session. Alex Beauvais, an honorable m em ber of the class of ’23, has been absent from school for several days on account of illness. But no need to worry now as he has resum ed his studies. (F re sh ie ) “ W hat w ould you do if you were in my shoes?’ ’ (S en io r) “ I ’d get them s h in e d .” T he seniors are glad to have M innie Pataw a back again. A nna La Rance, com ing back from practice, m ade a rem ark to a girl w hich ran som ething like this: I am going to put my books u n d er my head to -n ig h t so my brains will absorb ev ery th in g th a t s in them . N ext m orning, stran g e to say, she found her head as em pty as ever. C arrie A nderson, hopped into M r. Mason s car p ro ceeding to Silverton to see the gam e. But the fates were against h er. T h e car, w hile going along, finally got stubborn and buried its front w heels in a d itch . A fter a few m om ents of delay they tu rn ed back to good old Chem aw a, as th e c a r could not m ake the trip . . .. .'ju j g a g w e -g - . . J 1 - 1
