T H E C H E M A W A A M E R IC A N LOCAL M r. and M rs. Iliff were visitors in P ortland on S a tu r day. T he parents of M argaret E. Johnson were Chemaw’a visitors th e w eek-end. x\rchhishop C hristie, of P o rtlan d , and a num ber of his helpers, will he at C hem aw a n ex t Sunday to con firm a very large class of F a th e r G a ll’s charges. N o body can be m ore faith fu l th an our good father and he is appreciated. S upt. C halcraft of Siletz paid us a brief visit last S aturd ay . H e had been called out to th e valley on business and availed him self of the o p p o rtu n ity to see some of his Chem aw a friends. W e were certainly glad to see him . Mrs. F lora J. Iliff, o u r very efficient principal, is alw ays a very busy w om an, but especially so of late assisting in g ro u p in g and co -o rd in atin g the s tu d e n ts ’ classes for the in d u strial details, w hich change this w eek. M rs. Iliff is a w illing, capable and co-opera tive w orker. T here is no organization at Chem aw a which bids fair to be fu rth e r reach in g am ong the boys than the Boy Scout m ovem ent. M r. Bent is taking no little interest and the boys are m ak in g a splendid response. W hen we desire a n y th in g done “ ju st r ig h t” we have learned to call on th e Boy S couts. Silas Moon, an ex -stu d en t who has alw ays been a loyal su p p o rter of our school, paid C hem aw a friends a visit d u rin g th e week en d . H e was en ro u te to Siletz, w here he will spend a vacation of a few weeks w ith friends. Go w here you will you will find no man with a better rep u tatio n th an Mr. Moon. F o u r new stu d e n ts entered school this w eek. D or othy G reen and G us H u g h es classified fourth grade; L aura Jam es is pluckily a ttem p tin g the fifth, although she has been out of school for several years and the w ork is difficult for her T h e last to en ter is our form er stu d en t, W illiam M inthorne, who gladened the seniors by joining th eir ranks. A few of th e C hem aw a stu d e n ts who are atten d in g Salem high school had the pleasure of carrying home grade cards th at bore the m ark of highest attain m en t in scholarship. Joyce Sim m ons m ade 1 in sew ing and F ra n k Sookum Jam es has the sam e ratin g in shop m ath. Prof. N elson states th at every Chem awa s tu dent now atten d in g Salem H ig h is doing good work and is a credit to the in stitu tio n . Rose Gray made th e highest average Last Sunday e v e n in g ’s chapel exercises were of an in terestin g character th ro u g h o u t. T he orchestra played an “ Interm ezzo ’ by H ellard , L ucy V ernev and Eva M artin sang “ W hispering H o p e” by H aw th o rn e, M r. Bruce played as a clarinet solo the “ M agnolia Serenade ’ bv M is-ud, A n na L aR ance recited “ Casey at th e B a t,” the choir san g “ N earer and D earer” by W dson, and S u p t. H all gave an able talk as the closing feature. H e made clear the im portance of o n e ’s own m ental a ttitu d e if he would lj>e happy. H appiness he declared the inalienable rig h t of all hum an beings. It was a good serm on and carried a w orth-w hile lesson fo: all. PAG I: 3 Mr. Roy Bradley, supervisor of construction, arrived on schedule tim e last week to rem ain with us for so m e tim e, possibly until n ex t fall, to direct the con stru ctio n of the new’ dorm itory. E lean o r H ouk is m ajoring at the O regon S tate U niv ersity in physical education, and in a gym nastic test last week she was one of eight to receive 100 percent. E l eanor is try in g for the ’varsity basketball team and w’ill no d oubt m ake the position of center. She says th e ir physical education teacher is very strict and a w onderful instructor. H on E B. M eritt, assistant com m issioner of Indian affairs, addressed the M aryland F ederation of W om en’s C lubs at B altim ore, M d., som e days ago. H e gave a splendid and scholarly talk on Indian affairs. Mr. M eritt is th oroughly capable of h an d lin g this subject in a big way and m aking accurate statem ents as to the present sta tu s of the A m erican In d ian . H is speech should have wide dissem ination. Mr. and M rs. T u rn e y each year d u rin g the vacation m onths com plim ent the citizens of the Siletz Indian reservation w ith a series of m usical entertainm ents, w hich is an event looked forw ard to by all. On S a tu r day evening last this estim able couple drove to the G rand R onde reservation at the invitation of the In d ian s and gave an e v e n in g ’s musical treat to a crow d ed house composed of all the Ind ian s and w hites of th a t co m m unity. It was greatly appreciated and Mr. and M is. T urney had a great ovation at the close of th e program . In the audience were m any of Chem- a w a ’so ld stu d e n ts who enthusiastically welcomed their old friends. W hen it is rem em bered that Chem aw a has been in operation about 40 years and practically all of the In d ian s from G rand Ronde attended th is school, it can easily be understood th a t such an event would b iin g out the old pupils to royally receive and e n te rta in th e ir good friends, M r. and Mrs. T u rn e y . A M EMORABLE A F F A IR T h e P. E . O. sisterhood of Salem , of w hich our Mrs. H all is a member, w ith a delegation of ladies from P o rt land, W oodburn, A lbany and Lebanon, m et at the Chemaw’a auditorium F riday evening last, w hich to gether w ith the ladies’ husbands and invited friends, aggregated about one h u n d red and fifty people, to a t tend a dram a given by the P. E. O. chap ter of Lebanon, w ritten and directed by Miss H elen C raw ford, a pro fessor at O. A. C. T he en tertain m en t consisted of a d ram atization of the cardinal points of the sisterhood and was both beautiful, en tertain in g and elevating. All of the Chem aw a literary societies and em ployes of C hem aw a a tte n d e d . M any prom inent ladies of O regon were present am ong whom were Mrs. K ent, state p re s id en t, and Mrs. L ong, state secretary. T h e Salem ladies th o u g h tfu lly prepared a lunch for the visitors which was served after th e entertainm ent in our dom estic science d ep a rtm en t. T h e Sigm a girls did the serving. W hile th e stage w as being prepared for the presentation of the dram a our literary societies en tertain e d the visitors w ith songs and yells, w hich was an agreeable su rp rise. A ltogether it was a very profitable evening for all w ho were present and C hem awa is indebted to the L ebanon ladies.
