C hem aw a is a-bustle g ettin g ready for C om m ence­
m ent, w hich is n o t very far aw ay.
F rom present in d icatio n s th e W in o n a H all g irls
w ill carry off the honors in the com petitive drill.
T n ey can he heard d rillin g every m orning w hile th e
M cBride girls enjoy th e ir last “ forty w in k s.”
T h e second year vocational girls gave a dem o n stra­
tion d in n e r on W ednesday evening. E sth e r P aul
acted as hostess and served the d in n er, w ith th e
assistance of A n n a Stone. T h e g u ests were S u p t.
and M rs. H all, M rs. Jaq u in s, Miss P eters, Miss
F ra tis, Miss R einville, and Miss A nna M iller.
M rs. H all invited th e Sigm a girls over to h er hom e
on S unday to spend an inform al tim e becom ing m ore
acquainted w ith Miss Meek and Miss D eloria. T h e
girls furn ish ed th eir ow n en tertain m en t by sin g in g
songs and E lean o r H au k and Ju lia Grom off gave some
hum orous readings. L ate r in the evening m ost
valuable talk s were given by Miss M eek and Miss
D eloria, w hich were received w ith rousing cheers by
th e Sigm as. Ice-cream and cake were served.
T h e last p arty of the year w as given by th e F re sh ­
men class on S atu rd ay ev ening in the gym . T h is is
a very large class, com posed of about eighty m em bers,
and w ith the invited guests, the gym was com fortably
filled. T h e decorations were beautiful in green and
w hite, th e class colors, and th is color schem e was
cleverly carried o u t w ith th e d ain ty refreshm ents.
T h e F resh m en proved them selves to be adm irable
hosts and every one pronounced th e ir party to be a
great success. T he class was assisted in en tertain in g
by Miss H e n d rix , th e ir teacher.
All Chem aw a has been delighted to have as g uests
for a few days two young ladies of education and c u l­
tu re, who are im bued w ith high aim s, and whose m is­
sion is to help h u m an ity . T h ey are in every w ay
w orthy and equal to th e ir m ission. Miss Susie M eek,
one of these young ladies whose home is in S haw ­
nee, O k la., first atten d ed school at Shaw nee, after
w hich follow ed term s at H askell In stitu te , th en high
school, and later g rad u atio n from E arlh an College,
R ichm ond, In d ian a . Miss E lla D eloria is th e other
young lady and her home is S tan d in g R ock, So. D ak.
She w as educated at All S a in ts’ School, S ioux F alls,
So. D ak., and a Colum bia U niversity g rad u ate.
Both are Secretaries of th e N ational Y . W . C. A.
and are v isitin g all In d ian Schools, w here possible,
and they also lectu re before various college and
univ ersity bodies, h ig h schools, and associations
w hose m ission is educational and uplift w ork. T h e ir
h ead q u arters are in N ew Y ork C ity . I t has, indeed,
been a pleasure for all of us to have them at C h e­
m aw a, an d th e com m on verdict is th at th e ir v isit has
been too brief. W e will look forw ard to fu tu re v isits
from these estim able y o u n g ladies, and tru s t we shall
not have long to w ait.
OUR CHAPEL SERVICE
T h ere w ere exceptional features at chapel on S u n ­
day evening w hich m ade the program one of u n u su al
in terest in all. T h e orchestra played “ C athedral
C h im es” by A rnold-B row n, Miss Meek (a N ational
Y .W .C .A . Secretary who was visiting C hem aw a) sang
tw o num bers, on request G eorge B arrett played as a
’cello solo th e “ Song of In d ia ” by R im sky-K orsakoff,
th e O ctette G irls sang “ L eg en d s” by M ohring, Roy
N uckolls gave a n o ra tio n , th e choir san g “ H a rk , H ark ,
My S o u l” by S helly, the solo parts being su n g by
Miss Ju d d , and S u p t. H all gave a splendid ta lk , a d ­
d ressing his rem arks to the g ra d u a tin g class in the
m ain, b u t they were of a n atu re th a t made them of
in terest an d value to all.
It would be h ard , indeed, to suggest a n y th in g that
M r. H all did m ention w hich w ould help th e m em bers
of th e class in m aking a place for them selves in w h a t­
ever path to w hich th e activities of life may lead them
w hen they pass w ith o u t the protecting portals of our
dear C hem aw a. “ T h e Power of C hoice” may be said
to have been his them e and it was in terestingly and
ably h an d led . No class of g rad u ates ever had better
advice given th em —of th a t we are certain.

Miss Meek and Miss Deloria, rep resen tativ es o f the
N ational Y .W .C A ., were guests of th e local Y .W .C .A .
last Sunday afternoon. Miss Deloria spoke very in te r­
estin g ly of h er visit in o th er In d ian Schools and Miss
Meek spoke of th e obligation of Christian service w hich
falls upon g irls who have had th e o p p o rtu n ities of
ed ucation. A fter th e m eeting adjourned the girls
spent a very delightful half hour in g e ttin g a c q u a in t­
ed w ith th e ir visitors.
A oout sixty-five girls of th e L .L .L . C hapter of the
Y .W .C .A . hiked to th e woods last S atu rd ay afternoon
for th eir annual picnic. A baseball gam e, a track-
m eet, and a tu g -o ’-w ar furnished am ple en tertain m en t
for th e afternoon, and was followed by delicious
“ e a ts ” p repared by th e girls, th ro u g h th e kindness of
M rs. Brew er. All returned to the school w ith arm s
full of w ild flowers and voted it one of th e happiest
afternoons they had ever spent.
O ne of th e largest and most enjoyable jo in t m eetings
of the year was th a t held S u n d ay evening in th e
au d ito riu m , and attended by m ore th a n 250 stu d e n ts,
m em bers of the different C h ristian A ssociations on
the cam pus. P rof. G ilbert B eattie, of th e faculty of
th e O regon N orm al School, w as th e speaker of the
evening, using for his subject, “ W h a t is education?”
an d developing it along th e line of self-know ledge,
self-control, and self-expression. I t was one of the
finest talk s ever given before th e A ssociation at C he­
m aw a and was m uch appreciated by all who atten d ed .
M r. B eattie has sp en t tw enty years in educational
w ork in A laska and tock th is op p o rtu n ity to renew
h is acquaintance w ith a large num ber of the A laskan
stu d e n ts h ere.
