B ent, athletic m anager, is receiving requests from the big college conference team s for football gam es n ex t year. M r. A. M. Caisse, of T acom a, was a visitor on M onday. M r. Caisse at one tim e held th e position of clerk at th is school. S u p erin ten d en t and Mrs. H all m ade a trip to P o rt land on T uesday to interview S an ta C laus in th e in terest of C h em aw a's large fam ily. E lton Brickell is em ployed as a pressm an at the C apital Jo u rn al office. E lton is a ru stle r. H e is p ay in g all of his own expenses, board and lo d g in g , etc., and atten d in g high school th ro u g h his own efforts. It takes push, backbone and brains to w in and E lton has all three. A . assem bled S u n d ay evening in th e au d ito riu m for discussional m eeting T h e topic u n d er discussion was taken f io m th e second ch ap ter of “ T h e M anhood of th e M a ste r,” en titled “ T h e M aster’s M a g n a n im ity .” T h is m eeting was m ainly an inform al discussion m eeting so there were a variety of sp e ak ers, w hich goes to show how the m em bers are w hole heartedly behind th eir association. A lready some of o u r academ ic teachers are tak in g steps tow ard th e p reparation of a program for C h rist m as. In fact, we gath er th a t w ork is under way p re p arato ry to several en tertain m en ts to be given ere long. T h e Sigm a Phi Delta Society m et on last T h u rsd ay evening at the hom e of Mrs. H all, at w hich tim e the follow ing girls were initiated into full m em bership: Jo sep h in e C orbett, L aura W au n , N ancy M athison, T heresa G u a, E d n a H ill, Buelah W hite, E lizabeth C h u rch ill, E sth e r P au l, H a ttie Cay ton, T acom a S n y d er and A n n a S tone. At th e close of the initiation service a social hour was enjoyed and elaborate re fresh m en ts served. T hese eleven young ladies ate to be c o n g ratu late d , for it is an honor to be chosen a m em ber of this society. SE N IO R NOTES A few m om ents of practice on some new class songs enlivened the stu d y period. A h isto ry quiz is th e n e x t trial. W hy do th e teachers alw ays give tests ju st at the busiest times? Som e m uch-needed notebooks have at last arrived and also a su p p ly of better paper. W ork will look b etter. By a class vote th e usual F rid ay class m eeting was om itted to give th e tim e to some e x tra stu d y . T ests are becom ing th rea ten in g . On M onday evening the Salem S ym phony O rchestra, u n d er direction of Dr. John R. Sites, gave its first co n cert of the season. T h e program was well chosen and well rendered. M uch in terest was show n by o u r em ployes and pupils and th ere was a tru c k load of m usic lovers from C hem aw a, as well as m any w ho w ent in th eir private cars, in atten d an ce. C hem aw a m usicians are m em bers of th e Sym phony: Mr. B ent and F ran k P eratro v ich , cornets: G eorge B arrett, ’cello; Cruz Mc D aniels, double bass, and M r. T u rn e y , viola. N ancy M athison, Tacom a S nyder, T heresa G u a and B eulah W hite of the class of ’21 becam e m em bers of the Sigm a P h i D eltas on T h u rsd ay evening. T h e yearly basket social held on S atu rd ay night was a success socially as well as financially. N ever have more artistic baskets been m ade by th e g irls nor w ere m ore appetizing lunches p rep ared . T h ere were about 250 baskets sta rin g th e boys in th e face aw aiting purchase. T h e gym , for th e first tim e th is year, had on its gay a ttire w ith artistic festoons of g reen ery and school pen n an ts. A ll this w ith the h ap p y crow d of perhaps five h u n d red young ladies and gentlem en rendered th e settin g com plete. T h e school “ ja z z ” band discoursed m usic at various periods d u rin g the evening A ltogether it was an u n u su al event and w as th o ru o g h ly enjoyed by every-one p resen t. T h e h o u rs in th e dom estic a rt d ep artm en t seem ed long at first because the girls were not used to sittin g q u ie tly , b u t now th e tim e flies fast as the w ork grow s in te re stin g . N ancy M athison has heard th a t h er basket b ro u g h t m ore th a n the average price and she is holding her head very high. O ne of the girls was heard to say: “ My, I was lu ck y ; ju s t th e one I w anted bought my b a s k e t.” T h e senior girl w ho said it w as— but th a t w ould be tellin g . O ne senior boy alm ost lost the b asket w hich he had p u rch ased to an o th er boy who claim ed to have p u r chased it. H ow ever th e se n io rs’ m otto w as “ P erse v eran c e” and he carried off basket and girl. F o u r senior g irls helped in th e dom estic science d ep a rtm en t on S atu rd ay p rep arin g for th e basket social. I t was a long day of ex tra w ork, but th e girls gave th e ir services w illingly and pleasantly.
