She was m ost h eartily welcom ed by her d a u g h te r F ran ces of the Ju n io r class and by her pleas ant interest m ade m any friends w hile here. She is a form er stu d e n t of Chem aw a. T h is good F ath er is ever m indful of his charges at C hem aw a and his k in d ly endeavors are appreciated by all. Rev. Mr. K irk p atrick , P astor of the M ethodist E p is copal church of Salem , delivered a very stro n g address to the P ro testan t stu d e n ts S unday afternoon last. It was one of those sound and practical talk s w hich are appreciated by our stu d e n ts. Miss M cC racken, of Salem , san g a solo. I t was a profitable afternoon. F rom reports of the G oldendale team , and w hat we know ol the qualifications of our own boys, we predict considerable T h an k sg iv in g diversion for the sport- loving G oldendaleites. M r. S chw artz, Miss Barnes and M r. G lass of the Copper R iver co u n try , A laska, were guests of C h e mawa last week. Tw o little A laskan girls, one of whom is the sister of A nnie M iller, cam e w ith them to atten d school. M r. Schw artz is en ro u te to W a sh ington, D. C ., w ith th e idea of in te re stin g C ongress to m ake larger ap p ro p riatio n s for educational w ork in A laska. T h e Y .M .C .A . program given in the school au d i to riu m on T h u rsd ay ev ening last for th e com bined benefit of the association and C hristm as fund n etted nearly $90, of this am ount $75, w as set aside for the C hristm as fu n d . T h e en tertain m en t w as u n iq u e in every respect, consisting of u n u su ally clever stu n ts and was most favorably com m ented on by all who PAGE 3 atten d ed . Miss E ak in and Miss Judd and the young m en deserve no little credit for th e success attain ed . M iss S kipton e n te rta in e d S u p t. and M rs. H all, M rs. Brewer and M rs. Canfield at a well appointed d in n er on M onday evening. T h e chapel services on S u n d ay evening were of th e usual high stan d ard of excellence. T h e o rchestra played a “ S o uthern E p iso d e” by K uebler, C atherine L oftus gave “ On th e Ju d g m e n t D ay ” as a reading, Cruz M cDaniels played as a baritone solo “ O ne F le e t ing H o u r” by Lee, th e choir sang as a T h an k sg iv in g anthem “ O L ord, H ow M anifold are T h y W o rk s” by B arnbv, and S u p t. H all closed th e session w ith a splendid talk on politeness, personal address and a p pearance. As is ever th e case his talk was full of facts and carried suggestions and rem in d ers of value to all. T h e evening was one of interest and profit. ACADEM IC NOTES T h e p ain ters are p a in tin g th e bakery shop. T h e F resh ies are doing nicely w ith th eir weekly program s. Mr. F ra n k M artin of N om e, A laska, visited his d au g h ter E va at C hem aw a on M onday. T h e en gineers have ju s t com pleted rep airin g No 4 and 5 boilers and now will sta rt rep airin g No. 2. All the apples in the sm all orchard have been h a r vested. T h ey expect to finish the large orchard soon. Roy C ourville is engine ten d er on th e n ig h t shift at the engine house. H e is very m uch in terested in his w ork and is g e ttin g along fine. T h e m eeting was led by F red W ilder and special m usic was furnished by th e Y. W . C. A. cho ru s. A num ber of ex cellen t ta lk s w ere given by m em bers of both A ssociations, on such topics as “ W h a t C hem aw a has to be th an k fu l fo r,” “ W hat the Y . M. and Y .W .C .A . have to be th a n k fu l f o r ,” “ T h a n k s g iv in g as a h a b it,” and “ T he expression of o u r th a n k s .” T h e stu d e n ts w ho atten d ed P ro testan t service S u n day afternoon will not soon forget th e splendid serm on given by Rev. Blain E . K irk p a tric k of th e F irs t M eth odist ch u rch of Salem . H is topic was, “ F ish in g for W h a le s.” H e spoke of th e high ideals and almost im possible am bitions of y o u n g people, and expressed his adm iration for y o u th because it dared to strive for th e im possible. H e spoke of education as one of the w hales w hich you n g people are fishing for and stated th a t a stro n g C hristian ch aracter was the g reatest th in g in life th a t any y o u n g man or young woman m ight striv e to attain .
